Which AMD FX CPU will be un upgrade over my e6750?

Hi guys.
I've been reading a lot this last few days about bulldozer and gaming benchmarks against intels i5s and i7s.
What hasn't really become clear, is if an FX 4100 or 6100 are going to be an upgrade over my Intel C2D E6750 (at stock 2.66 ghz). I don't plan on OCing the new chip at first.
Also consider that I will be using a 500W PSU.

Here's what I have right now on my seconday PC that I use only for gaming:

CPU Intel Core2Duo e6750 2.66ghz (stock cooler)
Motherboard GA-P35C-DS3R 1.0
4GB Kingston HyperX Genesis 1333
GPU GTX 460 GC 768mb
Sound Blaster X-FI Extreme PCIe
PSU Cooler Master Silent Pro M 500W
HDD, DVDRW, etc

It seems like if I sell the CPU+MB+Sound+an old 9800GT I have, I can buy an FX6100 with, for example, an ASROCK 990fx Extreme3 (main work/gaming pc has a 3770k but I want to go AMD on this one).

Gaming is pretty nice on the current setup, with (eg) Transformers FoC having 40+ fps on 1080p and High settings.
On the other hand, NFS The Run struggles at anything on high at that same resolution.

So, what do you guys think?
Is this a worthy upgrade if I don't OC? Can the 500W PSU handle the 95W CPU + the GTX 460?

If I ever upgrade anything else, it will be the ram (swapping for 8gb at, at least, 1600) and a corsair H60 or CM Hyper 212+.

Sorry for the long post and thanks for answering!

Massive improvement, even at stock. I suggest the FX-6300, as it's only $20 more. You are basically paying $10 for another core, twice. That's amazing value. Honestly I would overclock the FX-6300 aswell. With a CM212+, you could probably get it up to 4.2-4.3 with little trouble (seeing as the turbo freq is 4.1), perhaps more.

500w Psu would handle it and a GTX460, although with little margin. I would go trying to push 5ghz with a 500w PSu, but at stock and alittle above stock, should be no issue.

Great news!
Thanks for your response.

The 6300 isn't available here on Argentina, and it will probably come much more expensive than it should.
So I'm sticking with the 6100 as my official option.

Time to go sell the old parts then!

I can't run an anandtech bench on the 6100, but it is between 5-15% slower than the 6300.

If i had to choose between a 4300 and a 6100, I'd take the 4300. smile.gif

Get a Vishera chip if you can, it's worth it!

I'll have to see how much time it takes to get here...
It's also hard to ask without 40 people jumping on the "****! get an i3 for that price instead" bandwagon.
Which seems to be a logical step if it gives more performance for the same money.

I don't know, something seems interesing about this FX chips.
Perhaps the fact that for a secondary pc it's nice to get a mb with a socket that will support at least 2 more architectures?

As much as I know AMD will be retiring the AM3+ socket after Vishera

Hey buddy, take a look at the marketplace here or pm me...I know where to get you a piledriver cpu, which is your best bet.
Your psu is barely strong enough to oc them, but even stock would rock.

Any FX chip will be an upgrade. Coming from an architecture that old, even single threaded performance will be quite a lot higher.

Yeah, but I'd go for the newer Piledrivers, wouldn't bother with faildozer myself...
I'm from Argentina too, you can simply order online and be done with it. thumb.gif
