AMD FX-8350 8C 4.0 Ghz.

Thread Starter
I've thought about upgrading my processor.

I have an AMD FX-8120 8C 3.1G ghz processor, and i thought of maybe getting an http://www.inet.se/produkt/5308711/amd-fx-8350-8c-4-0ghz because it's a bit stronger for not that much money. (I have some money left to spare, and it's enough for this and a new headset).

Or should i overclock my current one to 4.0 Ghz? (I have never overclocked things before, so i need a little guidance if i'm going to do that) The rest of my PC is displayed on my profile, so.. Suggestions!thumb.gif

That's a pointless upgrade.

Right, start off by giving your full system specs, motherboard, memory, GPU etc etc then we can work out the overclocking etc.

OP thats not a good way to spend your money. you would rather learn to overclock your CPU to 4 Ghz. At the same clocks FX-8350 is 5% faster than FX-8120. Also let us know your CPU cooler, power supply, monitor resolution, GPU. we could suggest a better way to spend money.

Thats not a good upgrade? I also have an FX8120 and I bought an 8320 as soon as they were released. Lets see 5-7% faster IPC, wayyyyyy better power consumption than I have right now and almost guaranteed to reach higher overclocks on my 990fx motherboard. I would say that is a great upgrade for only $179. Im currently at 4.3ghz with my 8120 so if i am able to get my 8320 to around 4.8/4.9ghz i am looking at a 20/25% increase in speed.

Dumbest. Comment. Ever.

Again, I maintain that it's a pointless upgrade and you will have better things to spend your money on.

7% faster IPC and better power consumption is the reason for my upgrade to a 8320 or 8350.
And on the OP question for the average user will not see any difference between a 8120 and 8350 at 4.0ghz+. I would keep it and oc the hell out of the chip if your mobo and PSU can handle the power of those CPUs.

That's a poor comparison. Cant account for a 25% increase when leaving the 8120 oc 5-600 MHz behind. You have to compare cpu clock for clock up the scale. You are being mislead if you believe to be a guaranteed higher overclock of piledriver over bulldozer. Many fx8120 on this forum hit round and over 5ghz just as many piledriver probably will. My fx8120 personally runs 24/7 @ 4.7 but will not remain stable for gaming over that. I can bench at 4.9. I think the overclock scale when the release settles down will be similar. 4.6-4.7 with relative ease and anything above that will be hit and miss dependant on binning, mobo, and a multitude of other factors, so at similar clocks the performance increase will still only be 7% in many cases. if it is the case that the fx8320 clocks much higher than and in more consistent numbers than the fx8120 then I will purchase one myself because +7% ipc increase plus another maybe 3-400mhz oc over and above what my cpu is gaming stable at will be an upgrade. The numbers remain to be seen over the coming days/weeks

That's a nice setup you've got there mate,

I really wouldn't bother with a new CPU, you should go Xfire 7870's mate, that would pwn any game out there.

Although, I don't see an aftermarket CPU cooler... Do you in fact have one or not?

if you don't, I'd consider the corsair H series or the Silver Arrow. Both are epic. If you want something on a budget then the Coolermaster 212 is good.
