Battery upgrade help (I have spent weeks searching!)

I have an Acer aspire 3100 lapotop; it's ok but the battery life sux so bad, it's beyond description. while using my verizon access card w/ the cpu, brightness, and everything elese turned down/off im still lucky to get more than 50 or so mins. Whether or not this is normal i want to upgrade my battery...

The one that came w/ it is a BATBL50L4, a 14.8V 2000mAh battery w/ a charging current of 1.6A.

The 5102(turion X2) and my laptop seem to be all but idectical('cept for the cpu obviously). so i tried to find one of those since i could make out in newegg's pic that it was 4400mah, right. It's like the battery for it doesnt exist almost. I have trouble finding the specs for that battery(mahrating) and cant find any other info other than its 8-cell and i's usally 4400mah.

i chek on acer's site for a compatible batt. upgrade but the battery listed for the 5100, 3100, and 5680 aren't even the right batteries. Every one i find that matches acer's code number looks kinda like a stick battery and is ment for other laptops. So i search for my battery. only one english link pops up and its a forum pst from a dude w/ the same prob as me(im getting to it).

all over da web i can find the BATcL50L/L4 replacment which has a great mah rating. usally either 4400mah or 4800mah. It has the same formfactor(appears phiscally identical), appears to have same connector, same voltage rating, higher mah(that's what im looking for), but is rated at 3.0 A charging current rather than my current battery's 1.6A. I checked my power brick and it's rated at 19v 3.42A. but says it's to replace a battery in a TM series, dont remem which one.

So shold i give the CL a try? or will it fry my time er... charging circuits or somthing?

Also i would like to upgrade the CPU to the turion X2 but my dad says it's incompatible even though the chipset and most everything elese is the same as the aforemention 5102. Also we're both worried doing such a thing will void the warrenty. but that's for another post, lets take care of the battery first, then i want to reformat, install XP on a sinle NTFS, then maybe consider a proc. upgrade...

Contact Acer directly. If there is a replacement, they'll know about it. From personal experience, battery searching on CL is a pain and usually fruitless.

For future reference If you are not using the battery don't leave it in the laptop. It is ok when it is off. but if you are using it and it is plugged in with the battery your battery life will degrade. Part of this is due to the fact that Lithium Ion batteries dont handle heat too well. the other reason is they dont like being charged constantly. For reference. I know the heat thing because I had to replace my cell phone battery after I left it in the car durring the summer here. It went from almost like new to holding no charge at all in that one day. it gets 140+ in my car. I would think that it gets hot in your laptop. Also they don't like being charged constantly. they don't develop memory like the old batterys do but they do still have problems.

This is what I was going to say. When you are not using the battery keep it in a dry bag at about 40% charge in the fridge (NOT the freezer). The best temp is 40F, just be sure you don't go below freezing.

thx guys. i've read that li-on batteries get pissed off easily

I really do take my laptop out and a bout alot, so usally the longest time it remains plugged straight is a few days. However, i bet this is still adding(slowly) to my low battery-life prob leaving it to charge alot. But on my model laptop oddly the battery is the coolest part of all the under side. It's positioned away from most of the heat sources on the laptop: CPU, HSF, HDD, RAM, stuff like that.

the cpu and ram rest roughly in one corner(upper left), the HDD in another(lower left, but seems a bit closer to center), the optical drive in the upper right, and the battery in the lower right.

neway, jsut to give you an idea of it's layout...

Dear Desert Rat, I bought two generic BATCL50L batteries. They do NOT work in the Acer.

Like you, I have searched and can not find a BATBL50L4 to use with the laptop.

I am going to search Panasonic sites, as they are the makers of the battery that came with the Acer.

If you had success in any other way, please let me know.

Fred
