Giving priority to GPU tasks over CPU tasks?

Hey, BOINCers, I've been monitoring my BOINC projects, and I've noticed that every now and then I get periods of time where I have only CPU tasks running, while GPU tasks are behind in line. I want to maximize my PPD, so I want to make BOINC able to prioritize GPU tasks over CPU ones. I know that you can eliminate CPU tasks under project preferences, but then I would have CPUs idle. Is there anyway possible for BOINC to only move on to CPU tasks only if all the GPUs are exhausted?

I think I know what you mean but I'm not sure if it can be done. If you're bothered by running out of GPU tasks, you can set the "minimum work buffer" and "maximum additional work buffer" to 2 days or more by going to "Tools" / "Computer preferences" from the "advanced view" of the Boinc program. Doing that should download plenty of WU's. I do this and never run out of GPU work units. . . or I haven't so far wink.gif

No, I have GPU tasks, it's just that they're waiting for CPU tasks to get done, leaving my GPUs unused.

Sorry I can't be more help! I run 7 Poem WU's at once and that doesn't leave my CPU free for other projects. Have you tried suspending the CPU project until the GPU WU's start and then tried resuming the CPU project? I've only been at this for a month but someone with more experience should be along soon smile.gif

have you tried lowering your cpu usage in the app_info file? your sandy might not need as much cpu time.

I didn't try that as I thought my time to completion would suffer, but I'll give it a go. It's set to 0.6 right now. Maybe 0.2?

.50 is what gamer had his set to. i lowered mine to .25 for cpu and i get the same times.

we have a couple generations newer intel cpus in our builds than gamer does, i'm sure we can handle it

Make sure you have the "Use GPU while computer is in use" box checked as well, and that you have it set to run no matter how much CPU usage there is.
