In the processor usage section, set the "On multiprocessor systems, use at most xxxx% of the processors" to allow enough free CPU for the GPU project.

In BOINC prefs>processor usage

I set 88% of the processors usage, allows 7 threads of CPU computation, and that leaves a thread clear for feeding the GPU's
