MSI R7850 Overclocking Black Screen During Stress Test

Thread Starter
Hi,

I've been overclocking my MSI R7850 using MSI Afterburner 2.2.4 to 1150 MHz core clock and 1450 MHz memory clock on stock voltage and ATI Catalyst driver 12.8 then I ran OCCT GPU to test its stability. Around 1 hours 45-50 minutes, nearly 2 hours, the screen just went off (black) and I heard the fans are spinning very fast, making a very loud noise I never heard before. I had to manually turn off the power to get my display back and return the fans to normal speed.

Did I push my graphic card too far considering I'm on stock voltage? Temps are fine, constant 66 C under load (63 C if I turn my AC on) as I heard this card could take as much as 80 C, am I right? Anyway, how long should I test my card for stability? Am I overdoing it?

Any help is very appreciated.

I usually test for 10-15 min. If nothing happens the I consider job well done.

However, best test is in gaming, if the overclock is unstable you will get driver not responding, artifacting or crashes, then you know to back off the volts/clocks.

My CPU and RAM overclock is already stable. I have no game crash, artifacts, or driver errors. It's fine when playing games. Do you think the crash is because I'm overdoing the OCCT test? 2 hours and 15 minutes is a large difference...

I can't seem to control the voltages with MSI Afterburner. Any solutions?

Most likely, for running the test for so long. So basically, as you describe it, there is no real issues here since the card overclocks are stable everywhere else!

By the way, your card has to have the capability for volt overclock, that Afterburner can utilize. If your card is volt overclockable, make sure you enable that feature in Afterburner settings, and then you'll be able to slide that volt overclock bar.

Glad to hear that! I'll just test for 15-20 minutes from now on then.

Okay, I tried messing around with Afterburner and voltage control is still locked. I have changed the MSIAfterburner.cfg file and dropped in dlls that were removed on newer Catalyst (this extends the limits to core clock and memory clock though). What did I miss?

Try asus gpu-tweak.
I've been reading on 7850 threads for months, many had speed limit or voltage problem with afterburner and switched to gpu-tweak and trixx

Will do after I push it to it's limit on stock voltage! Which one is better and able to assign a dynamic voltage? Asus GPU tweak or Trixx? What I mean by dynamic is that voltages will automatically drops when the GPU is idle.

^ trixx have better fan profile but bugged with 3D overclock voltage for 2D idle clock as you mentioned.

I'm using gpu-tweak

Your card is overclocking good, what is the ASIC % ?

I think I'm going with GPU tweak later. I always assign fans to auto because I heard it's less stressful for the fans (heard it many many years ago, IDK if this is still up to date).

This card surprises me. I have a room mate who owns a Power Color 7850 PCS+ with higher ASIC rating, 80 something as far as I can remember, and he can't even get it stable at 1050 MHz core clock and 1450 MHz memory clock. He gets vertical grey/green lines while playing games and it disappeared when we turned down the memory clock. It scares me to push the memory clock too far.

Edit: I found out that MSI Afterburner 2.2.4 is very buggy. I tried applying my clocks to default (900 core, 1200 memory) and it just won't apply. GPU-Z is always reporting different clocks than what Afterburner set except when I'm on my maximum overclock (1170 core, 1450 memory). I'm trying Asus GPU Tweak now.
