The main thing holding Windows 8 back is that Windows XP is still so fresh in everyone's mind, which includes the longevity of it. Since then, we've had Vista, Win7, and Win8 all in a what, 6 year span? THAT is what is keeping everyone hesitant to upgrade (remember, many businesses just bit the bullet to upgrade to Windows 7 within the last year, they won't be using 8 probably at all), and is also the reason why they're allowing you to upgrade to Windows 8 for $40 ($15 for a limited time).

And then there's the 17 people that think the Metro UI is so terrible that their computer will explode if they install Windows 8.

My computer would probably be fine, but my soul would die a little more. And of course I'd have a bad GUI that I'd have to avoid and work around.

But here's the good news folks: I don't have to mess with it. smile.gif

Windows 7 is the new Windows 9. Come back to the light. tongue.gif

NO!

If the final copy is anything like the beta, its dumb design, its basically Windows 7, with a stupid smartphone theme installed on it. It might be good on a tablet or touch screen laptop but not for desktops.

Apparently MS put a fair bit of thought into them, and I LOVE my Win7 shortcuts, so I'm willing to learn a bit if the new set of commands is so powerful.

Take my advice, and don't use Defender. Sure, it's a free built in tool that provides some basic protection, but you'll do much better with something like Avg or Avast. One example why I prefer a third-party antivirus is the lack of a scan option in the Explorer context menu. But even so, Win 8 does have better security than 7.

Win 8 by far is the best OS for PC. For me of course. Loving it and can't find anything wrong wth it.

No, I find the new GUI counter to what I consider intuitive when using an OS. I don't mind the Metro tiled display, but the lack of a start menu is pretty much a deal breaker. Most people who say they love Win8 say it's memory management is better, overall speed of the OS is better and I don't disagree. But for me it changes too much of what I rely on as a point and click GUI user to consider it viable for gaming. It's currently on my laptop and most likely will be for a while, but I don't ever see it being on my primary/gaming machine.

It seems to me that Windows 8 is trying to push Windows Store as the next standard. Ultimately what if we end up with an OS that will only allow you to install stuff that comes from the Windows Store and NOTHING ELSE. At that point I suspect we'll all be labelled pirates and hackers as we circumvent legalised madness. I certainly would have no moral reservations!
For now all I see is Windows 8 = Windows 7 with a touch-screen tablet interface, i.e. it's awful (I have better words to describe it but they're against TOS). I don't even want Windows 8 for free, much less if it involves me actually paying for it. I don't see myself being that stupid. What ultimately worries me is Microsoft moving toward an Apple-esque closed eco-system.

I'm one of those people who personally doesn't like the Metro system. Although Windows 8 does have some improvements, most notably in it being a bit faster in most tasks. However, that's really not enough for me to spend money to upgrade to a new OS. I'm using Windows 7 right now, I have it tweaked and modified just the way I want (including Windows Blinds) and I really can't think of a good enough reason to leave it behind when it's working fine as it is.

Maybe if I was coming off of XP or even Vista the upgrade would be worth it, but from 7...not much point.
