Hey everyone,
Just noticed this post and thought I would join in. I'm a die hard PC gamer but I also work on my PC from home everyday. I have two comps next to one another. My awesome overclocked powerhouse desktop for work/gaming, and then next to it a backup Toshiba Qosmio x505 gaming notebook, which is mainly used for music production/entertainment today.
On my desktop I have Windows 7 ultimate, and when Windows 8 came out I upgraded to Windows 8 Professional 64 bit edition on my laptop (so if I wasn't crazy about it I wouldn't have to deal with it on my main computer). Here is my take on this subject; and let me be clear, more so than the average PC user/builder/enthusiast I am a professional computer programmer/developer of 8 years and a senior in college for computer science, so I think my opinions on this mean something. biggrin.gif

For gaming and entertainment, I have to say that Windows 8 should work great. Why? First of all, my laptop used to be very prone to blue screen of deaths because of all the music hardware I have rigged to it. Since I upgraded to Windows 8 on there, I have not seen a single blue screen. I mean it used to blue screen so often I had to send it in under warranty to confirm nothing was wrong. The framework is definitely stable. Not only this but it's not as much of a resource hog on your computer as the originals. Windows 8 boots faster, shuts down quicker, and is overall a nice OS. Lastly some of the basics have been improved, like file transfer times which is nice for moving big game files from hard drive to hard drive.
But something else cool that I really like about Windows 8 and why I think it would be nice for gaming. The new Windows / start menu is super convenient for gamers. Think this - I often skype with friends and so forth when gaming. One thing that gets annoying is having the skype window pop up / interrupt gaming. In Windows 8, skype runs as a nice "background" utility in it's own window that doesn't seem to interrupt your current application. Skype is just one example - alot of programs run this way in Windows 8 and it's actually convenient.

So should you get Windows 8 pro as a gamer? Well if you are using your PC STRICTLY for entertainment/web surfing/gaming, then YES. It actually works GREAT for that purpose. What I don't like Windows 8 for is for professional use. Are you a developer/coder/designer/video editor like me? I don't like it as much for my main workflow/work station. It's just to "entertainment/fun" oriented for me to make it a work OS, but I might upgrade some day on my desktop.

tl;dr
Windows 8
- Has nice features, loads fast, less of a resource hog for gaming
- Turns on/off much faster even without an SSD, doesn't seem as blue screen prone in my experience
- If you are using it JUST for entertainment/gaming, it is definitely worth it and has convient features and nicer/simpler windows that don't interrupt your game
- If you work on your PC and code/develop/do editing, you might want to pass because it's a little too gimmicky/entertainment oriented then having a serious workflow

WHAT NOT TO DO
DO NOT read stupid reviews on the internet tearing windows 8 apart. ALOT of people are stupid/impatient and/or already have their minds made up about it before trying it. Look at this ignorant 1 star review from New Egg.
CTRL-ALT-DELETE is the only place I've found to restart, or sleep my computer. It's not compatible with most of my programs.

So you're giving it a bad review because you didn't take the time to learn the new OS? And compatibility with programs - it's still WINDOWS at the core. If you are having problems you can still run programs in backwards compatibility mode.

In the end, I think Windows 8 is worth it. It's refreshing and we're PC enthusiast, most of us like to have the newest/latest stuff. Give Windows 8 a chance and learn it's interface, you will not be dissapointed. And I'm not saying it's entirely bad for work, as I write this I think how fun it might be to actually have it on my main computer, I'm just still a little weary of letting Windows 7 ultimate go for my main workstation. thumb.gif

Maybe. One of my roommates has it and claims its awesome. I can get it free through DreamSpark and my school so I'll definitely consider trying it. If it's bad, I can always just go back to Windows 7.

I like it on my laptop smile.gif

I use Win 8 on 4 screesn! What now?! Lol sorry, had to do it. No issues with corner clicking on my setup and holding the mouse in the bottom right corner of ANY screen brings up that bar, so it's pretty easy and useful.

I wont be putting Windows 8 on my main rig, but I definitely will dual boot my parent's new HTPC with it to see if my mom likes it.

But when you run in NVidia surround mode, it treats all your screens as one big screen smile.gif

I own Windows 8 Enterprise Edition and i'm very glad to have it ..
Like the others OS Windows 8 have "+" and "-" ..
Microsoft took out the Start button but it's not so bad , because you can acces lots of information with the "keyboard windows" button smile.gif
What i hate the most on win 8 is : when you start your pc / laptop after windows loading they request every time your password (although you are already connected on it with your email&pass)
Also this OS loading very fast if u have a ssd or a fast hdd .. even faster than win 7. wink.gif

But in my opinion it's a very good OS .. is not "moreee beteeer " than win 7 but it's more "customizable" and that's what i like on it thumb.gif
