Please help me pick out a laptop!

Hey, first of all I appreciate any and all of your help. I haven't paid much attention to the laptop market lately and I know the OCN family can do a better job than I can.

What is your maximum budget?
I would like for this to stay for sure under $750, but I am shooting for more around $600 not counting a SSD.

What country are you in?
United States

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Homework while staying at friends houses (the gaming requirements should take care of all processing needs) and light gaming (mostly either turn based strategy or RTS). I don't mind low settings, but it needs to be fluid and playable.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
I am a huge fan of Samsung's products lately (RAM/SSD market)and I know they make great products, but I also enjoyed my last HP laptop. However, I am willing to think outside the box on a solid recommendation. No preference between AMD/Intel, but the Trinity APU's are intriguing. (Only A10-4600m or A10-4655m).

Is there a certain style of laptop you want?(aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
I would like this to be as close to a text book (portability) as possible. Definitely at or under 15.6". Also prefer it to be aluminum. Thinner is better, doesn't actually have to be a Ultrabook/slim but it is definitely preferred.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
Doesn't matter as long as it is not beaten up.

How long should the battery last?(Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
As long as it's over 4 hours. No preference, longer is better.

What operating system do you need?(if any)
I'll be running Windows7/8

How much hard drive space do you need?
At least a 120gb SSD. However, I do not mind adding that myself.

Do you need any special hardware?(blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
I only really care about HDMI, webcam, and USB3.0. Optical drive is not required.

Is there anything else we need to know?
You tell me tongue.gif.

Once again thank you for your input!

Has i5 and GT 630M. It has some low ratings because people thought it had a backlit keyboard and it didn't. Also for some reason the specs on amazon say it has 512MB of RAM but I don't think that's enough to even run Windows. Samsung's website and also one of the Amazon reviews says it has 4GB.

1. Would you prefer to add a premium for a very good screen or is the average laptop screen is ok?
2. If you do (I suggest that you do), then there are some options under 750$.

a. One option is the HP dv6z-7200:
http://tinyurl.com/dv6z-7200
with the good fhd matte screen and 7670M you get a decent laptop for 730$ (use coupon code SAVE20HP)
However, the "old" dv6z-7000 (which is actually the same, I guess, only with Win7 and maybe some minor changes) was selling for 700$ with better specs, so I think that if you'll wait a bit (two weeks, maybe month), you'll get a better offer for the price.

b. the Lenovo L530 with I5-3210M and good 900p screen (not as good as the 1080p one HP uses, though). I think it will be something like 700$:
tinyurl.com/LenovoL530

3. If you don't need the good screen, you can still take the HP dv6z for 600$ with 7670M or other laptops with A10-4600M like the Z585

512MB of Vram is enough to play most games up to 720p just fine on Windows 7. I'm not sure where you're getting your info from but that's bollocks here on OCN. Anyone on here will tell you that much. rolleyes.gif

No, it says 512MB of RAM on the Amazon link. Just RAM. It might be referring to VRAM, but if that's so then it doesn't list system RAM at all. Either way I don't think it's accurate that it really has 512MB of RAM tongue.gif

Even still, the machines at my school, the ones we'd be doing programming on and such, would only have 512MB of RAM and they ran Windows 7 just fine. Granted they were slow, but they didn't come across as horrible... at least... no more horrible than the Pentium 4s were in those same machines. X3
