Well, yes. It'll probably be a while though for it to completely disappear.

eSATA was doomed from the start, in my opinion. Most ports can't supply power, requiring use of an external power source, which somewhat defeats the "portable" aspect. Not to mention, eSATA is nowhere as prolific as USB. I would say a good chunk of external hard drives in use today will never need the extra features and bandwidth eSATA can offer, either. I work as a field tech, and I don't even use eSATA for things.

Yeah, eSATA basically died once USB3.0 started to appear.

eSATA biggest issue is that it doesn't provide power (although, I believe there is a newer spec that attempted this). Well... that and it was not very widespread. Most people using external HDDs don't need all the features of SATA so USB3.0 is good enough since it provides enough bandwidth and power.
Once again...

Ever see an eSata cable? They're like friggin fire hoses. Not that USB3 cables are exactly svelte, but still eSata is hard to handle. this made worse by the 6-foot limit, which can really make the reduced bend distance annoying.

Yeah, they did, eSATAp. Even then, there's variance in those ports too. Most ports are essentially USB/eSATA combo ports, which allows use of 2.5" hard drives. A handful even have 12v pins for 3.5"s. I rarely see eSATAp ports, and I've never seen one that has the 12v pins. It's hard to think of a situation where you absolutely need the bells and whistles of SATA, and portability.
