The hope was for the very things I am talking about. However the FCC found out really quickly that major corporations would be willing to pay massive amounts of money for portions of it, numbers in the Billions.

So they auctioned part of the 700Mhz spectrum, and are currently in the process of doing a Reverse Auction to the major Broadcasters in order to perform an Auction to other major corporations.....

It is disgusting really.

Say big business buys the entire 400Mhz spectrum, but only deploy it in Chicago, New York, LA, Huston. What they do with it, who knows, they can do what they want as they "own" it now. That "ownership" covers the entire country! Even though they are only using it in those select cities, another company couldn't deploy on 400Mhz in Whoville, Rural, USA.

God I'm torn. Country needs money, people need freedom.

On the other hand, I don't see companies policing their "range" if it's only gonna be implemented in certain areas thinking.gif

edit: Anyway, let's hope this new idea here works out to be a true. Will certainly soften the need for the premium bands.

This country won't see a dime of the money paid to the FCC for the spectrum. Even if it did, the amount of money that would be earned if it was deployed in a wide area and used by business would quickly trump what one company pays to "own" it.

Ok then. Speculations on what the FCC uses it for? (not arguing. Just curious, you seem to have a better grasp of the situation than me.)

You know, I was thinking. Consider there's still a (little) headroom as far as wattage goes in these bands (I still get an analog channel 35 here, don't know where it's broadcast from), and now there's this technology. Couldn't cities and such set up their own public high-speed WiFi's if they stay under that wattage? Or is this not available in a price-point?

They use it to protect you from mean words like "poopie" and immoral, blasphemous boobies on TV.

The FCC is one of those bureaucratic organizations that I would eliminate whole-cloth if I was given the power to do so. They do nothing that could not be handled by a UL type organisation, and exist almost exclusively to line the pockets of large media corporations. The fact that they are pushing for the installation of various taxes to increase their operating capital is criminal as well.

I've read a bunch of Postal's run-downs of this whole crooked ordeal, and it just seems that the FCC sells the bandwidth to raise cash. The corporations that buy the bandwidth just sit on it to stifle competition and maintain the status quo.

This doesn't make sense. They are paid money to dole out fines?

This pretty well sums it up.

FCC fines are typically outrageous and not to scale with the "crime". Within the industry it is a known and excepted fact that the FCC is a Kingdom, and a place for only the elite and wealthy. Much like the FDA is funded by the Pharmaceutical companies, the FCC is more or less ran by the major broadcasters. Who, for their own gain, don't want any form of competition, even if it isn't competition.
