Phenom or Piledriver? For gaming. - Page 2

As a Phenom II owner who's looked at the recent Piledriver benchmarks, I vouch for Piledriver, as long as you overclock it.

no way would i buy 8350 at its 200 price point, at that price i would recommend something like a 3570, but you are also talking about a 965 which is on the cheaper end, so how much are you looking to spend and what do you plan on doing with it/ playing on it

Which MSI are you looking at? Be warned as the lower end ones may be dangerous to use with higher TDP processors.

A phenom II 965 for $75 (if you can get it for that) is a better value for a gaming rig than any of the initial price points on the Vishera chips.

Is vishera better? Depends on the game in question and OCing results, but is it better by enough to justify the price gap? Probably not.

If you DO decide to get a Vishera chip, the FX-6300 is the sweet spot for a gaming rig IMO. There are plenty of games that are using ~3 cores, a 3 module piledriver just makes sense here especially as scheduling improves. The 6300 costs ~8% more than the 4300 but brings a lot more than 8% to the table by comparison. Keep in mind, ALL of the vishera chips are currently being sold at prices ABOVE MSRP. Prices will come down $10-20 for these chips pretty quickly if I had to guess. Maybe a month out? 2 tops IMO.

Regards,
Eric

Thread Starter
I'm looking at the msi 990fxa-gd80v2. It has amazing reviews and people say msi really stepped up to the plate in terms of quality and reliability.

They have a combo on newegg with that mobo + 965be + memory I don't wat for $226. I'm contemplating it right now or to wait for a deal on piledriver.

In all benchmarks the FX 4300 does better than the phenom except in Cinebench R11.5. A part from this it equals a Phenom II x4 955 and in gaming it's slightly better than the 980. Overclocking it to 5Ghz would equal a Phenom at 4.7Ghz but no phenom would ever clock that high. Phenoms were really good and severed ever user very well and long but now PD is in the limelight and i think it's there to stay for a while given it's good increase over BD and even over the Phenoms. My advice would be to go with PD thumb.gif

a phenom to 4,7 Ghz will destroy PD, even 8xxx if is a x6., you need 4,8 Ghz PD to reach a 4 ghz phenom,.

PD to 5Ghz gives 1,27 in single thread , phenom II to 4,1 Ghz gives me 1,26, yes PD has more cores, but for gaming doesnt matter in almost all cases

your typical phenom will never hit 4.7ghz 24/7. I had the same chip as you (1055T) and mine hit a wall at 3.4. Every now and again I'd push it to 3.8(at the max) and could never lock down stability.

wth.gif I don't think OP was planning 24/7 LN2

I'd go with Gigabyte more than MSI just because they scared me with their VRM failures awhile back.

And ASUS does have a BIOS for PD. Problem is that they didn't update their CPU list. They said in an email to me that it's because they haven't tested it yet on several older motherboards.

In response to your actual question: what GPU set up are you doing and what resolution do you think you'll be gaming at? Will you be doing other things besides just gaming? Have you set a budget?
