BTW OP: I've only overclocked AMD and I love it. But it can be quite frustrating and there's A LOT to learn. With Intel, it's pretty simple so I've heard. But commonly I see people start OC with Intel, try AMD, throw Rage fit and end up despising everything AMD does.

I hear what you guys are saying, but if I go intel i might as well go haswell because ivybridge has no upgrade path and I dont wanna pay that kind of money for tech thats already gonna be outdated.

Maybe I should spend a bit on my current system, just upgrade to a phenom and better gpu and build brand new when haswell comes out?

I'm in the same situation. If you still want to stay with AMD wait until 2013 and see how Steamroller does, if it isn't worth it then switch. I really hope they don't release Steamroller then fix the things wrong in Steamroller with their Excavator chips. You should really just wait it out and see what happens in 2013, don't rush into something because there are always better things on the horizon.

Steamroller is not Bulldozer Enhanced. F*** no. The layout might look the same but our LEGO blocks are completely different. When all is said and done we should get 45% improvement and this goes to show how the Bulldozer was f***** design. This is all what Bulldozer was supposed to be.

Hopefully this is true..

In all benchmarks the FX 4300 does better than the phenom except in Cinebench R11.5. A part from this it equals a Phenom II x4 955 and in gaming it's slightly better than the 980. Overclocking it to 5Ghz would equal a Phenom at 4.7Ghz but no phenom would ever clock that high. Phenoms were really good and severed ever user very well and long but now PD is in the limelight and i think it's there to stay for a while given it's good increase over BD and even over the Phenoms. My advice would be to go with PD thumb.gif

What benchmarks?
The ones to look at would be Cinebench single-core,Super-pi 1m
i.e. Single-thread is what's important for gaming.
There have been some improvements with piledriver.
But this says it all right here: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/10/22/amd_fx8350_piledriver_processor_ipc_overclocking/3
22.something seconds for 1m superpi..
That means thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif for gaming; especially when Ye Olde 965 Black edition will do the same bench in under 18 seconds
http://www.hwbot.org/submission/2293165_fire2fire2fire_superpi_phenom_ii_x4_965_be_17sec_755ms

That's a 4-second difference in a timeframe of 20 seconds-ish.New stuff=slower.

I would get a 6300 Uses a little less power but is still very capable of gaming.
