i need a laptop bag since i don't trust carrying my new lappy into my regular school backpack. my friend recommended ful backpacks to me since he has one and they look pretty good to me. dedicated compartment for laptop, padded, and waterproof. i was looking at this one: http://www.amazon.com/Unisex-Overton-Backpack-Orange-Gray-7-5-Inch/dp/B001CKRQNG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351210455&sr=8-1&keywords=ful+overton
. other suggestions are welcome. trying to not spend more than $50 on this.

Anything from http://www.everki.com/ or http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/
Both companies make quality laptop bags.
Most likely Everki will fit your price range, you can find most of their products on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=everki

I have an alienware backpack for my laptop and im not a fan of it, im getting something for my shoulder, when i try to take it off my back ive hit my laptop off of a few walls because it slides to the side not straight down.
I would get something over the shoulder. Sure its less masculine but i think its safer.

Take a look at Wenger Swiss Gear backpacks. I have the Ibex 17 which runs anywhere from $60-$100 on sale, and I love it, gets used regularly for work, can hold 2 laptops with power bricks, mouse, notebooks, all my comm cables for different devices I work with, some small hand tools, a small ethernet switch with some ethernet cables, etc... I love it, and I think about 8 of us here at work have the same or similar bags, and everyone loves them. Very comfortable, and well made.
I assume you will be carrying they lenovo in your sig? My ibex 17" is good for older 17" notebooks, but I tried a new 17.3" Dell and it did not fit, Luckily my HP Elitebook 15.6" is my regular work computer, and it fits with plenty of room
Amazon has some cheaper ones HERE

+1 on Wenger. Very durable and nicely padded. It really protects the laptop. Lots of pockets to stash accessories, too. Got mine free (Office Depot rewards) but I would certainly be willing to pay good money for it (I believe retail for my particular bag is $120 but can be had for ~$60 from Amazon).

Thanks for the suggestion on the Wengar backpacks! took a look around on amazon and those seem pretty amazin
i saw the ibex 17 you were mentioning and it looks like its really good and has lots of space for my binders and notebook. It looks like it has 3 main compartments. one for the laptop, 2nd for general purpose items, and 3rd smallest one for stashing small things quickly. can the first laptop compartment hold a binder or notebook if there's a laptop already in the first compartment. how big is the 2nd compartment? how many 1" binders do you think it can hold in there? ibex 17 looks really tempting to buy
and yes, i'm talking about my lenovo y580.

and yes, i'm talking about my lenovo y580.The laptop sits in a sleeve that is raised off of the "floor" of the backpack and off of the sides in the largest compartment. there is spaces to put some stuff in the compartment as well...
As for the number of binders... I don't know, never tried, I have fit an hp elitebook, its power brick, my work mouse, my Sager NP8130, its power brick, a gaming mouse and my notebook for work with room to spare... at least a few...
