Proposed loop; GPU+CPU

Update: I've decided I'll get a new case for Christmas that's more suited for watercooling. Going to stick with what I've chosen except I'll swap the 120mm rad for a 360mm rad and hang it off the back of my case for the time being.

Hi, I'm currently looking at some options for putting my GTX 680 under water and was hoping I could get some advice/input from you gurus.

I bought the XSPC RS240 Raystorm kit about a month ago; http://www.frozencpu.com/products/16891/ex-wat-219/XSPC_Raystorm_750_RS240_Extreme_Universal_CPU_Water_Cooling_Kit_w_Free_Dead-Water.html?id=Bj8srdAQ&mv_pc=2105
and I was planning on using the radiator and water block that came with it.

My proposed parts to add to the loop;

120mm radiator; http://www.frozencpu.com/products/16235/ex-rad-409/Alphacool_NexXxoS_Monsta_Single_120mm_Radiator_-_80mm_Thick.html?id=Bj8srdAQ&mv_pc=2277#blank

Pump; http://www.frozencpu.com/products/6073/ex-pmp-53/Danger_Den_DD-CPX1_12V_3-Pin_Powered_Pump_-_DD-CPX1.html?tl=g30c107s153&id=Bj8srdAQ&mv_pc=2501
---I've read that the XSPC X2O 750 pump doesn't have enough power for an extra rad and block. Please correct me if that's wrong.

GPU water block; http://www.frozencpu.com/products/16975/ex-blc-1216/XSPC_Razor_nVidia_GTX_680_Full_Coverage_VGA_Block_-_Black_-_Reference_Design_new_style.html?tl=g30c311s1631&id=Bj8srdAQ&mv_pc=3251

Compression fittings; 12x http://www.frozencpu.com/products/13099/koo-289/Koolance_12_13mm_ID_x_58_16mm_OD_G14_Threaded_Nozzle_-_Black_NZL-V13-BK.html?id=Bj8srdAQ&mv_pc=2798
---I actually don't know exactly how many fittings I'll need (yeah, total noob redface.gif) but I figured two for each block, rad, pump and res.

For tubing I've got some generic solid black 5/8" x 1/2" from Lowe's.

Now for the questions: Does anything in that list not add up? I.e. will the pump be strong enough/will the radiators be adequate? I haven't chosen a reservoir yet. I was wondering if I could use the bay res that came with the Raystorm kit? I don't know if it's possible to remove the pump without damaging the res but if it's possible I'll be glad to do it.

Relevent data: My CPU is a 2500k @ 4.7GHz @ ~1.38v. When folding/prime95 it maxes out at 62C and averages 58C. My GPU is an EVGA GTX 680 @ 1249 core clock.
Everything involved for this build is in my sig rig "Botanical Dimensions" btw.

I've got a soft cap for my budget at $400 and a hard cap at $500 so feel free to point out anything that would net me some better performance that what I've selected.

Sorry in advanced if this is all a little jumbled up. I've been up for about 36 hours now sleepysmileyanim.gif

You are going to try to fit the DD pump in the XSPC res? If i were you, I would use the pump that came with that and save some $. I wouldn't use generic tubing, but you also need something to prevent algae growth.

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/11441/ex-tub-705/IandH_Silver_KillCoils_-_Antimicrobial_999_Fine_Silver_Tubing_Reservoir_Strip.html

The extra 120mm rad will be good for the GPU.

Thanks for the response. I was planning on mounting the DD pump on the bottom of my case and purchasing this reservoir;
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/9540/ex-res-153/Danger_Den_RAD-Reservoir_Internal_External_Liquid_Cooling_Reservoir_RES-005.html?id=KD7dbtM3&mv_pc=814

The only reason I wasn't planning on using my existing pump and res was the pump randomly lets off an annoying buzzing/humming noise. I suppose I could use what I have now and save that money for a better watercooling case. According to FrozenCPU the pump I have now actually pushes out 40 gallons/hour more than the danger den pump I had chosen so I should be in the clear.

As far as algae/bacteria growth goes I've got a silver kill coil and a 10:1 water:antifreeze mixture.

XSPC RS 750 is a great starter kit.

Pump: Don't bother with that DD one. I'd stick with your current pump and if that doesn't work than upgrade to either a MCP35X or a D5. If it's making noise that's probably because drive-bay attached pump/res things can vibrate a bit. I think your 750 will be ok for now though because...

Radiator: Cracking Rad, but I think... not needed, your loop is about 300W I reckon... what fans do you have running on them? I'd definitely recommend putting 2x Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-15s on them instead. If you are taking your loop apart anyway, then for the sake of an extra $60 it might be worth whacking that rad in. Defo get some decent fans on though, they will make the biggest difference.

GPU Block: Sorry don't know.

Compression fittings: Plan the layout a little, you may need to get some 90 degree fittings. I generally buy an extra straight and an extra 90 just in case. Can be annoying when you are half-way and realise a 90 would've been better there!

Res: If you do upgrade the pump, I'd sell the pump and res as a combo... I can't see someone just buying the pump.

Hope that helps a little.

Cheers,

DB

I've got 3 x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835553005 on the 240mm rad. Two pulling and one pushing (damn 8 pin CPU cable is preventing me from mounting another push fan). I haven't tried the Gentle Typhoon AP-15s yet but I've heard great things. I've been rocking these cougar fans for a while now and I love 'em. They push plenty of air and until they're ramped up past 80% they are dead silent.

Since I'm in the market for a better watercooling case I'll skip the 120mm rad for now. That will leave me with about $330 to blow on a case. Got any suggestions for that? tongue.gif

I've heard good things about those cougars, so let's keep them and possibly you can compare them against GTs at a later date!

Whereabouts are you based?

I'm thinking get a case which can hold your 240mm rad now, and has space for another 240 or 360 rad.

What case have you currently got? Can we do an easy mod is my thoughts.

What size case do you want. I don't like huge cases myself for example.

Cheers,

DB

I'm based in Knoxville, Tn.
I was planning on something similar. Any case that can hold at least two 240mm rads will be more than enough for anything I'll have in it.
I'm currently using a Corsair 650D. I've thought about modding it to fit a 240mm rad in the front.
Case size isn't really important for me. I'll put casters on it anyways so it can weigh 80lb empty for all I care thumb.gif

Thinking save some money and mod your already decent case?

Howsabout sticking a 200mm rad in the front... seems a perfect fit? Link That's almost the same surface area as a 360mm rad.

That and the 240mm in the top will offer plenty of cooling and look pretty smart I think

You do lose a few 3.5" bays... ah well. I'd personally locate the pump and res down there too.

Cheers,

DB
