360 vs Ps3 explained in detail. - Page 3

Begin brain hurl:

I had no idea the CPU's on these hybrid processors only executed in order. That means one of three things:

1) The game developers will need to think in terms of clock cycles rather than high level programming. For example, they would need to know how many cycles are required to setup the command, to execute the command, and output that command. That's like microcontroller programming. Difficult and time consuming.

2) Sony and M$ have both setup a pseudo multi-threaded OS "wrapper" to hide these deficiencies and expose only the high level commands necessary to develop the graphics, AI, sound, etc.. This would take alot of time and machine speed would vary greatly as this kernel is optimized over time (probably what they are doing...a la directx riding on a pocket pc).

3) A hybrid of both 1 and 2 (Worst case in my opinion).

Anyhoo, no one is really good at creating complex multi-threaded apps on multi core systems. It's getting better. But, the bottleneck is in the "wrapper" OS. M$ has a serious lead in that arena.

Good article. I had read most of that before it just wasn't as well explained. With all that talk of the PS3 being so much more powerful and in the end its GPU can't stand up against the Xbox 360s. On a side note both consoles have amazing graphical capabilities. Just look at Gears of War and Resistance Fall of Man.
