Hi,

This question/favour is related to this thread I made a few days ago:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1319442/is-my-graphics-card-faulty-video-audio-links-inside

It's a long winded explanation, and there isn't really any need to read it since I now know the problem is related 100% to the graphics card itself. Today I took the card to a friends house and ran it in his system (re-installing with the latest Catalyst 12.10's). His system is very similar to mine (Intel i5, Z77, Windows 7 64 Bit) and he normally runs a Sapphire HD 7870. Basically with my card installed in his system, the fans exhibited exactly the same behaviour in the same situations. I'm actually really pleased about this, since the last thing I wanted to do was start troubleshooting my motherboard and other components.

I've contacted ASUS support, but before I accept any offer of a replacement, I'd really like to try and make sure that this issue is isolated to my card itself, rather than it being the case for the whole production line. So, if there is anyone in here who is currently using the same card, I would appreciate it massively if you could try a few things and report back. These are:

1. Make sure Fan Control in CCC is left to automatic control, and that you don't have any other 3rd party fan speed controllers active.

2. Set your 'Display Sleep' timer for 1 minute in 'Power Options' in Control Panel.

3. Close any programs you have running and let your display go to sleep.

4. Observe the fans on the graphics card. Do they stop completely? If left in display sleep for a few minutes, do they occasionally spin up very briefly?

If they don't spin up AT ALL for 5 minutes in display sleep, thanks a bunch for your time! If you could let me know in the thread I would really appreciate it.

If, however, they do spin up (and you can be bothered) could you try the following?

5. Open only Steam, start something downloading, then close the Steam window to the system tray and let the display go to sleep.

6. Listen closely to the GPU fans....do they remain silent? Or do they rev up audibly every few seconds or at all?

Again, whatever you find, I would be really grateful if you could report back to the thread.

Rep-ing like crazy to anyone who is prepared to take the time to do this,

Many thanks,
Toby
