I got the upgrade yesterday and installed using the iso and serial to a virtual machine and a fresh install worked fine.

Ok guys problem Solved.

I fired up the iso DVD I burned while in Windows 8 via the wizard (instead of booting up the PC and do a clean format)

It told me if I wanted to install Windows 8 so I followed the insctuctions, the wizard again installed Windows 8. But this time the wizard asked me my CD key before doing any of these actions. After everything was finished, now my Win 8 is activated.

I guess it is best to do this upgrade while in Windows instead of going to the boot screen, formatting the C drive and proceed.

Okay so I have dealth with this for years actually. You have to do a clean install of Win8 and then after you get to the desktop pop out the dvd and then re-insert it. Tell the window that pops up to updgrade or install windows. You should be able to use your key after that. What it is, is windows is an upgrade path to itself. Yes you have to install Windows twice but you still get a full version of Windows for the upgrade price.

The reason the key doesn't work is because you're doing a clean install.

Microsoft forgot to tell people that the boxed set is an upgrade.

HOWEVER, after installing the first time, and the key doesn't work, just shut down your computer, and restart it with the win 8 disk in there. Go through the install again. It will think you have a previous version of windows in there, and the key will work after the second install.
