The best thing you can do is to run the beta switch, it will not prevent you from getting a 762x (get that and you'll get the 2.25) but it will give you a higher probability to stay away from those.

If you get a 762x and 2.25, you should let that unit finish before switching cores, as you found out switching in middle of a 762x won't work.
