Help a noob OC his 3500+

Thread Starter
Hi guys;

I recently ugraded my rig with a Powercolor X1950 Pro and a 64 3500+. It used to run a 3000+ and I got a decent overclock out of that chip.

The 3000+ would run all day long with the FSB at 234 and I was happy with the speed increase (though there was probably more to be had, I am simply not skilled/knowledgable enough to get it).

I put my 3500+ in last night (a full retail box from newegg) and was disappointed to see that it would not even POST with a FSB of 212. The high I can go is 210. I tried to up the vcore using the 3.3%+ setting in the BIOS, but it wouldn't post like that either. All other values remain default.

So now, I'm not sure what to do next. I've read some of the FAQs, but I'm still not sure where my problem is. I thought maybe my PSU wasn't good enough, but then I remembered my 3000+ ran fine on the 3.3%+ setting.

Do you guys think the X1950 may be draining too much power on the +12v rail?

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you...
1. Set the RAM default speed lower to like DDR333 (or DDR266 if necessary when you hit the higher end OCing)?
2. Set the Memory multiplyer down from 5x to 4x for CPU bus speeds up to 260... then drop to 3x above that?

A helpful read to find your components stable maxes...

I have the same CPU. I've put off trying to OC it except for the built in feature that comes with my motherboard.

depending on your stepping you're going to have to put a lot of volts to that thing to get it stable. at 1.55v you might be able to get 2.6 out of it (your motherboard will actually undervolt to around 1.5v).

1. lower the CPU multi and raise your FSB to compensate.

2. run a memory divider (133 if your memory isn't great or 166 if you can keep around 225-250 fsb).

3. raise your mem voltage to 2.8v (your memory will overvolt to 2.9v if its set to 2.85v) run a PCIE clock of around 107 to achieve more stability

4. put your NB voltage up a little to about 1.6v to 1.65v.

5. change your HT multi to 4x (maybe even 3x). you don't need over 800 HTT anyways.

and if you can afford it, buy a more stable power supply. 400w simply isn't enough anymore for stable overclocks.

Dependant on the stepping, a few most recent produced of the Venice cores have been freeky fast with 3G being possible.

BTW, keep the full load temp @ or below 50c and get a better HSF to keep that CPU safe

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try them when I get home.

Does anyone have a PSU they recommend?
