Torn between some tablets.

Thread Starter

I can get either of the 4 following tablets.

Nexus 7

iPad Mini

iPad 4th gen

Surface

Which would be better? I use my current Archos 70b ereader (which runs Froyo) for watching videos, streaming, and reading ebooks, but would be able to keep the Archos as an ereader. Would like a tablet that will last a few years, has a decent screen and battery life, and has decent app support. Cost isn't a problem, would be getting the 32GB Wi-Fi variants of either (and I have a HP Mini netbook with a 250GB HDD, 64GB iPod touch, 16GB Galaxy S2 and 4GB on the ereader already, so the device would mainly be for video, games and browsing). Solutions that just work are preferred, and if it could handle 720p (or 1080 but I'm not fussy) it would be good. A decent web browsing experience would also be an advantage.

Which would be best for my needs? I'm leaning towards the iPad (not the Mini) because of the decent app support and the fact that it "just works" but I'm also very interested in Surface.

New 4th Gen iPad has the best screen out there, best app selection, and if you already own apps for your iPod then you'll be able to use them and not have to repurchase them (which would be similar on an android device) - i personally love my iPad Retina, but of course there will always be different opinions out there depending on what flavor of o/s you like thumb.gif

I'm easy with all 3 OS's, I like Android, iOS and I'm sure Windows 8 is good due to the touch screen.

If I were you i would take 2 things into account. One, when are you buying? Two, what is your budget?

Given an infinite budget I would go surface pro when it comes out? (I don't think it is out yet). You get windows app library.

Given something a little cheap I would go iPad 4 over surface RT.

To be honest I don't get why people care about the higher resolution of the new iPads. There isn't really any benefit. You don't get videos over 1080p -720p right now and I personally don't like playing real games on a touch interface, so unless you are looking at a ton of high def pictures or love your high def UI it's not a plus.

That being said, the iOS app support is better than the windows RT app support.

I'm buying before Christmas and it's not an infinite budget, £500 is the max, but an iPad 32GB would be in budget.

Can't decide the iPad 4 gen or surface ... The retina display helps a lot if you use Citrix and need to look at high def raw photos

The iPad 4 or iPad Mini I say. The latter if you want to read a lot or if you want something really portable, or the iPad 4 if those things are less important. It's a real power house and the display is fantastic.
