Undervolting issues

Thread Starter
I am trying to undervolt my son's i5-2500K to get the temps down and it seems to be unstable at even 1.17V from the default 1.18. The board is a Gigabyte GA-H67N ITX. Is there a guide somewhere on Sandy Bridge undervolting practice? I really don't want to underclock, just undervolt.

If you have a cooling problem, don't solve it by undervolting....solve it by fixing your cooling problem!!

Undervolting on sandy bridge will only make the processor run about 4 degrees C cooler. If you having cooling problems, undervolting will not get you anywhere.

proof.gif http://mattgadient.com/2012/05/21/sandy-bridge-undervolting-offset-vs-manual-observations/

The 2500K is "safe" as long it's it's running under 85 Celsius under load. Damage doesn't occur to greater that 90 degrees Celsius. My 2500K is running at 4.8 GHz @ 1.45V, and runs in the 70's under-load just using a air heatsink. I am completely lost why someone would need to undervolt a 2500K to keep their temps under control.

Also,...why did you buy the "K" version of the processor if you have no interest in overclocking? Just wondering...

*confused*

Thanks for the link. I was worried... probably for no reason... that now that I m feeding the air cooler wth hot air from the GPU radiator that things would get too hot under load. Clearly, I don't have to worry.

I got the K because a) it was only $10 more than the non-K, b) I was considering switching to a Z77 board later, I probably won't bother now, and c) the IGP is better in the K and I have already used it when the discrete card had to be sent in for warranty repair.

:-)

The 2500K can take a LOT of punishment. As long as your case has adequate ventilation, hot air from the GPU being fed into the CPU won't cause any problems under "normal" operation.
