I used to have the Swan M200 MKII. A good set of speakers, but there are so many options out there. I still wouldn't consider a $400 set of active speakers, high-end. lol

What's your budget? You could go with passive, but that requires an external amp, not necesarrily a receiver.

did you think the m200 needed a sub? what would you get if you had about $1000 to spend. btw yes swan is a high end speaker.

First off I wouldn't consider any active speaker "high end". The amps they stick in active speakers tend not to be the greatest. Also I would get a sub, it will fill in the lows much nicer then the pair of bookshelf speakers would.

Though if I was considering spending as much money as your on this deal I would get a nice pair of klipsch bookshelf speakers or even one of the higher end polk bookself speaker if the price was right and a nice amp and a sub. Setup like this would sound much nicer then what your planing.

If you're going to be listening that close, a coax or dual concentric speaker such as a KEF monitor/bookshelf would be a much better choice.

For $1000, you might consider grabbing a pair of KRK Rokits and a BIC H100 with a nice USB interface for your machine; your ears will love you for it.

I've also had the Swan M200 MKII. It was meh IMO. Going high end on a PC is no win situation IMO. Just get something decent and be done with it. I'm currently running some Emotiva Airmotiv 6's and they sound amazing near field. I'd still rock a sub but they really pump out some great bass. Adam makes some great near field monitors as well.

I disagree. Computer rigs dominated most of the rooms at the last few high end shows I've been to...and many of those rooms(not all) sounded very good!

Besides, I'm a little biased having 3 rigs here built around a PC or laptop...

Get a pair of KRK 10-3's (it is what I had when I had this exact idea)

Got to listen to a pair of JTR Catalyst 8C's the other day, they were on par with the 10-3's and cost 1/4th the price.
