Got to listen to a pair of JTR Catalyst 8C's the other day, they were on par with the 10-3's and cost 1/4th the price.

You mean Seaton Catalysts. JTR is similar but make the Triple 8's and are not powered. I have both.

Besides, I'm a little biased having 3 rigs here built around a PC or laptop...

So what in your opinion is high end? Nothing on this thread is even remotely high end. High end would be getting into the Genelec 8050A type of region. IMO, Get some decent speakers and a really nice set of headphones.
Those Kefs would be a nice mid-fi system but are by no means anything close to high end anything.

What he said but really, nothing wrong with good bookshelf / nearfield speakers and a sub on a room corner. You can easily get a decent speaker setup around a computer rig. Surround sound around a computer rig and a small room, where most computer rigs are in, is just stupid and not cost effective.

He stated a $1,000 budget and that's why I chose KEF.

Thread Starter
those golden ears look nice but there not powered. i didnt want a amp or receiver on my small deck i dont have much room with my 27'' screen and headphone set up. i like the kef's but can see spending that much sense i have a very good dac ( music stream ll + ) i know kef they do make very nice speakers. just looking to get a nice speaker set-up and i think for the money the swan m200mklll fits it nicely.

Thats my point, although those kefs are supposed to be pretty good, they are in no way hign end. When i said high end stuff is pointless on a PC, I'm talking about actual high end stuff. Anything over those kefs you posted or similar, is pointless IMO for as pc system. My airmotiv 6's were $699 and even that is getting into overkill range for the PC.

Those look very interesting for the price. thumb.gif

Difficult to balance subwoofer vs speakers. I suppose the best bet for you would be to consider KEFQ300s or B&W 685s with a subwoofer.

Price ultimately depends on the deal you can snag and used is always preferred as it'll push your value to the limit.

Both of those speakers above go for ~$650 leaving you $350 to buy a subwoofer on. It's doable.

The swans don't hold a candle to these speakers. The Swans are really meant for a lower price range and are selling their beauty rather than their sound. If you went with the swans you would DEFINITELY need a subwoofer.
