maintaining Windows 7?

Thread Starter
Windows 7 64bit Laptop

My system is starting to screw up & slow down

Things like,

- Longer start up / shutdown times
- Some system tray icons are not loading
- Failure to read Chinese/Japanese characters on files (displays squares instead of fonts)

Note: The above mentioned happen randomly, so sometimes they do and sometimes they don't

What can i do to "clean up" the OS? other than a fresh install tongue.gif

I red about various registry cleaners but from what i understand, they do more harm than good and most are snake oil,

Any suggestions?

There really is no substitute for a fresh install but there are things you can do. I generally like to do a fresh install every year or less. Uninstall any programs you no longer use. You can use cleaning programs like CCleaner which isn't perfect but can fix some strange registry entries left from installing and uninstalling programs. Disable any startup programs that you don't need which you can access by typing msconfig into the start menu search and go to the Startup tab (you might have to play with it, as you don't want to disable things you want like the on screen display for shortcut keys of the laptop). In regards to the display issue of foreign languages you could try installing the newest display driver. Then once you've done all that do a defrag if the laptop uses a mechanical hard drive but don't if it has an SSD (which don't need defragging). The default Window defragger is junk so download Auslogics Disk Defrag.

Thanks for the info mate,

I've tired CC cleaner before (Windows XP 32bit) but it made my the system worse, still, that was a long time ago (6-7 years) so the software is probably much better by now (i hope tongue.gif) as for defragmentation (mechanical HD), Windows 7 does a good job at this without the need for manual intervention (as far as i understand)

Things other than the tried-and-true reinstall?

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a good program. Install, analyse your disks and select "defrag and optimize". Could also check the health of your disks and do a benchmark with HDtune
