It is on sale at Newegg and I want to go Xfire and watercool it, but I want to buy one that will be decent on air for a bit.

check with sapphire if this card is compatible with reference HD 7970 waterblocks. also check with the waterblock manufacturer which you are going to go for if this card is compatible.

Shouldnt be voltage locked. Sapphire only had one model that did that and it is easily unlocked.

Thanks for the article! This answered my questions. Can't pass up the deal between the games and those massive price drops. Should have a nice chunk squirreled away for an IPS display biggrin.gif

This card isn't compatible with reference HD7970 water blocks.

It's a great looking card.

How can you tell? I d prefer some method of determining this than just accepting it at face value. I know some models have heatsinks that simply need to be removed. Thanks!

If not compatible with a reference cooler, is it compatible with the other Sapphire 7970 blocks?

Just a note if you are new to Trixx - when you are at the screen where you overclock the clock speeds, you actually have to SCROLL DOWN to adjust the voltage, after you disable ULPS

There are no sapphire specific blocks. Ya best heed SonDa5's advice or you'll be making another sapphire is not reference thread. wink.gif

I know I picked up a Sapphire 7970 OC edition earlier and I just made sure to check with EK's water block guide first and verify with Swiftech's compatible Item # guide. I had grabbed http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-PCI-Express-Graphics-11197-01-40G/dp/B007JGARVU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1351610346&sr=8-2&keywords=sapphire+7970 for 380 a month or two back, albeit with no games. Full cover GPU block fit like a charm.
