[GeekWire] Battery breakthrough: New technology promises to triple lithium ion capacity

If you look at a current lithium ion battery, one of the components is the anode electrode. That currently uses a form of carbon as the material and that carbon has a limit to the amount of energy that can be stored. That ultimately limits the performance of the battery. So what we’re doing is developing new anode technology that has the ability to store up to three times the energy of existing carbon-based anode technology. So that would translate into three times longer application times for your phone or laptop if that performance was translated to the rest of the battery component.

We’ve demonstrated a material that has better performance than the existing technology and demonstrated it with a material that costs less to fabricate than the existing material. We’ve basically got not only a performance enhancement of almost three times, but also reduced the cost. Our material can be directly placed inside existing cells, so the battery manufacturer wouldn’t have to change anything other than switching out their existing anode material with our anode material.

I get encouraged every time I read this type of thing. How long will it take to implement? Judging by the fact that it can be dropped into existing batteries, this should be a quick-adoption thing, AND it's cheaper than modern solutions. How could you NOT want to push for quick implementation here? smile.gif

I think you're right. There's just too many companies in the mobile realm right now for them to be trying to sell exclusive rights and all that other whatnot that goes on in other tech fields. Not to mention power tools, R/C toys, it's on the way.

With the new power saving CPU's that's is coming the next years it will probably be used more to reduce cost and wight and size of battery in laptop/tablets.

Would be good, if it ever gets properly implemented.

I'm gonna say there are two scenarios:
1. Hope the Oil companies don't buy up the patent and then shelve it.
or
2. this was possible 30 years ago, but the oil companies shelved it.

Well then, let's hope they have the resources to rely on trade secrets instead of filing new patents. I take back what I said about exclusive rights. CONTRACTS! CONTRACTS EVERYWHERE! Heh never thought I'd say something like that.

On the other hand, it's not as big of a jump nowadays as it would have been back then, so maybe big oil won't take such notice this time.

i've been waiting for this, everything is advancing except battery technology. my nokia 1100's battery can last for a week, i want my galaxy s3 to outlast that.

imagine the impact this would have on the electric car market. it could increase the range on cars from 120 miles to 360 miles boxing3.gif

Hey. You're right. Didn't even think of them. That Tesla doesn't look like a rich girl's toy so much anymore.

this battery tech is exactly what we need to bring affordability to long-range electric cars. The Tesla Model S is a beast, 300 miles per charge, 0-60 5.6 seconds, but @ $50,000 price point it would be cheaper to buy a lifted diesel truck with mud tires and drive it around in 4x4 all day.
