Mind is currently being blown trying to imagine how much better it would be if they put some of that extra charge to work increasing performance along with range. bigeyedsmiley.png

One of the comments in that article does not seem as convinced that we'd see a 3x increase just by swapping carbon for tin. I have to admit that I'm skeptical too, only because it's so incredibly rare that a simple material change can result in such dramatic improvements in any field or industry.

have to play the devils advocate on this one, 3x battery life and cheaper construction sounds too good to be true. Maybe 3x theoretical life best case scenario in ideal settings.

I would not expect 3x straight up either. But I do have a (fading yet educated) grasp of chemistry and I can tell you that if ideal conditions are 3x, it is still likely that a very sizeable (at least 100%) increase is still well within possibility. I base this projection on the fact that this is more along the lines of a chemical change than a metallurgical or structural one.

The variables as far as feasibility and performance in this case are things like operational temperature range, durability, the reactivity of the new composition, and overall battery life. That aside, a carbon-based battery would need to be composed of graphene to overtake this composition (edit:as far as capacity is concerned). And this definitely would not be cheaper.

edit: You could also argue weight as a factor, since Sn has no bragging rights to lightness.

Have no fear. There's no chance of what you're frowning about happening because of this.

I'm gonna say there are two scenarios:
1. Hope the Oil companies don't buy up the patent and then shelve it.
or
2. this was possible 30 years ago, but the oil companies shelved it.

exactly what i was thinking

It's sad to me that many people think we should just write things like this off because someone is going to buy them off and stash away the patents and all that. I understand that it's a real possibility and there is a track record for things like that happening in the past. The difference that can be made is that sharing the developments NOW (when they are still new and gaining traction) as much as we can is going to make it a lot harder for multi-billion dollar entities to hide it under a pile of money. That's why I post these types of things here. I have great interest in the development of science and technology and I want to tell everyone I am aware of with the same interests as possible.

So, hey, tell your friends, ok?
