My new crossfire build... need help with card

Thread Starter
I'm finally ditching agp this winter and nabbing an almost new rig
First off though, dont suggest I save for the r600, if i wanted to spend $600 for video games I'd grab a Wii60. But thank for your help in advance.

I'm kind of wary about the x1950pro as a solution to my problem. I've got an 850xt which is by no means obsolete yet, but can I expect a decent increase in performance from an x1950pro? Or should I just get a full 1900xt? which does seem better, but at a higher price. This PCI-E world is new, strange,
and frightening to me.

So you know I do plan on getting a dx10 card next year I just want prices to come down to resonable before I look into it, especially if I'm gonna need a new PSU.
Any help would be appreciated

Well mate Firstly YES a New PSU will most likely be needed to run Either an X1950PRO or X1900XT. At Full load it may draw too much from your PSU.

So I would invest in a new PSU at the same time if not first.

You would want a PSU with atleast 600-700 True watts with atleast around 60 Amps on the 12v Rail Especially if you are going to CF either a X1950PRO or X1900XT also a PSU like that would also hold you out for the future two.

Now for the actual cards i Would say that Due to the Core Difference the X1950PRO would be better than a Single X1900XT...However im not too sure on this fact. However any one of those cards put in CF will last you a long time

And yes you will see a definate improvement over your current card and you will also have gained SM3 shaders.

woah that was fast... Thanks for the help man. Good to know, forgot about sm 3.0 support so knowing that I think I'll go with the 1950pro in CF and get a dx10 card next christmas, or early next year. Just hope pci-e 2.0 doesnt sweep the market before then.
Anyone got suggestions on a power supply for about $100-$150? This is going to be my first truely new build except the case, and I'm slowly learning that building a new rig on my budget is like playing tetris with money.

lolz just read this on newegg in a review for a x1950pro, I smell smoke... does anyone else?

In the Catalyst Control center i can see the memory clock at 581 MHz, but my memory clock is at 700 Mhz. If i try to overclock it, it only goes to ~790-800Mhz. The specifications say a 1400mhz. memory clock, so maybe i dont know which button to push to make it faster ;-)

You dont need a PSU with a 60amp rail, the X1950XTX's only require a 38 amp rail for xfire. A PC P&C 610 would serve you very well at around $170, it has a 48amp single rail which is more then required by a bit. All specs are based off continuos(sp) usage not MAX like alot of PSU companies do, so its full load out put is alot more then 610 watts.

I'd be much more partial to the OCZ 700w PSU for much much less $.

And, yes, I smell smoke coming out of that guy's ass. People like that shouldn't be able to write reviews.

Nah the PC P&C is a better power supply. I just ordered a GXS 700 as the PC P&C was just out of my range at the moment, yes its cheaper but its not a high quality PSU like the PC P&C 610.
