Image quality question

Hi all!
First time posting here.

I have a Benq G2420HD running at 1920x1080@60Hz with DVI cable, nvidia Gainward GTX550Ti, win7 64bit.
The thing is, in videos, games, browsing it's ok, but as far as wallpapers go - gradients, smooth color transitions appear as if over compressed.

To explain better:
http://blog.lenycom.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/wallpaper-1080p-12.jpg this one has curved stripes on the sky and on the water, mostly on the right side

http://windows7themes.net/wp-content/gallery/windows-7-pink-theme/5-pink-wallpaper.jpg on this one, there are horizontal stripes in the boat area

http://desktopwallpaperdownload.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/love-your-desktop-1080p-full-hd-wallpaper.jpg this one has half circles on the right and on the left

I've posted on another forum in my country, and the answers weren't quite usefull... although many replied that they didn't see the image faults i mentioned.

If you also see the images smooth with no artifacts or such, i've overcompressed this image so the idea will be more easy to understand:

I've tried, win7 display calibration software, nvidia color correction things, switching the monitors hardware profiles (sRGB,movie,games...) so my guess is that it's either the monitor/video card drivers, the video card or the crappy quality of the BENQ monitor.

I know it's an TN panel, a cheap model for the 24" area, but i've also had a 17" lcd, brandless, on witch i didn't notice any such fault so i'm a bit surprised if the problem comes from the benq panel - i would have expected more from a brand monitor.

One possible cause could be having your monitor set to 16-bit colours, make sure it's set to 32-bit.

smile.gif nope, it's on 32bit. The image is good, except for some gradient imperfections. It's more like it were 31-bit instead of 32-bit smile.gif

Are you sure it's the monitor and not just the jpg compression? I made a gradient and saved it as a .png on top and a .jpg compressed by 25% on the bottom. On my monitor, I see no banding on the top and a fair amount on the bottom. How does it look on your screen?

Banding! That's the word for it! Thanks smile.gif

The png one has a little, but the bottom one has significantly more.
I presume that if it were a raw format uncompressed at all (i think that png add's a bit of compression) there would be no banding at all.
Thanks for the reply aroc91
