That's rarely possible though. An overclocked Core 2 Quad is still going to get spanked by a stock i5-760, for example.

I have a 3570K 4-Core CPU @ 3.4Ghz Stock. I Overclocked it to 4.6Ghz because I will need the speed when I run 2 x HD 7970.
You don't actually need to, you just want more performance; It will still work without an overclock.

In no particular order ... for me ...

Bragging rights.
"Free" performance gain over stock.
The challenge.

more PPD when folding.
faster/snappier interface ie i know when im not overclocked.
free performanc/optimising something to work how you would like it.

dont get me wrong i wouldnt sneeze at a standard 2600k but ive got another 1.0GHz per core. so i get 8ghz more in a roundabout way, and for what?! for sitting around, sorting my volts and working the multiplier?!

and your gaim frp, p4 to i7 will be MASSIVE. not 5-15% more like 100.thumb.gif no joke i went froma core 2due to my rig. difference is night and day.

Moar PPD.
Keep my feet warm in the winter.
Moar PPD.
Couple extra fps.
It may not seem like a lot but 10 seconds off per frame on a 1000 frame animation adds up quickly.
I plan to overclock my 4p when I build it, for more ppd rolleyes.gif and e-peen of course. How many people do you know that has 48+ cores of 3Ghz unnecessarily water cooled Opteron goodness? biggrin.gif
Oh and did I mention moar PPD?

Now with overclocking being artificially limited to the more expensive SKUs, a la Intel's K-series "overclocking tax," it doesn't really give you a free benefit as it used to. But it's still faster and still fun.

$10-$20 isn't that big of a deal tho; I don't even recommend the non-k chips for client's builds for the fact the price difference is so minimal, plus you get a better igpu.

Hey Laz, why aren't you folding yet?!?!?
(Why was that deleted??)

while true, an overclocked first gen i5 will hang in there with an i5 3450 and my i5 3570k will probably top a stock haswell or broadwell

But that wasn't a major architecture change; Haswell is going to be a major architecture change.
