Help, chrome sucking up all of my RAM...

Thread Starter
So recently I've been getting some stuttering while using chrome. Momentary hitches and then its back to normal. I decided to check the task manager, and chrome is taking up 3 to 4GB of memory by itself! Typically 1.5GB for the primary and then about 20 to 30 processes using anywhere from 500MB to 50MB. Is there anything that is prone to leaks in chrome? I only have adblock plus installed, and usually run about 8 tabs which half of them are text only no images.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Closing it out and restarting the program drops the usage back to around 100MB total even with the same tabs, but it rapidly climbs back up within about 10 minutes.

Its the way chrome works. It will pretty much use all available ram to cache stuff. I have Chrome using around 8GB for ram on a daily basis but its not an issue since chrome does free up ram if other app need it and dump the overflow in to the pagefile.

I really don't think any browser should be using up 8GB, and it is creating big problems for me while I'm folding. Since the priority is low I'm maxing out my RAM and causing the system to stutter badly. I guess it might be time to switch back to firefox if thats the case.

Well to be fair I have over a 100 tabs open at ones so its bound to take up a fair bit of memory regardless of what browser I'm using.

Except thats one chrome process... it totals almost 6GB right now with 5 tabs open. It has also spawned 14 processes total, and I don't remember it doing this before. I'm not too sure what I can do besides switch browsers.

Sounds like a memory leak then potentially. Do you have a ton of extensions and addons?

The high number of processes is normal (if you have many tabs open), but I agree, that's way too much RAM usage. I just opened a bunch of tabs of various websites, and most of the tabs were between 50MB and 80MB each. A Pandora tab racks up about 100MB and a Netflix tab took 140MB.

Try unchecking "Continue running background apps when Chromium is closed" from the settings, and disable any unused Plug-ins (via Content Settings in Settings). Yes, Plug-ins and Extensions are two different things biggrin.gif.

If that fails, you may want to backup your settings and data, and re-install Chrome.
