Why not buy XP MCE & upgrade to Vista l8r? - Page 2

It seems like a good idea to buy, but I think I'm staying away from vista til I have a dx10 card. I didn't see anything useful from going from 2k pro to xp pro, infact right now I'm running 2kpro.

what about the premium vs ultimate. To me it seems like very little benefit to go with ultimate?

I found this site, but still looks like very business specific advantages.

My idea is to buy the MCE now, and leave it sitting. Then in Feb time-frame after Vista is released and GC prices come down slightly (and hopefully some good games will become available), I'll order my parts, build my rig and install MCE at that point. I will then immediately use the free upgrade to premium. Reading this site however makes it unclear to me if I can really do this- they make it sound like you must buy a PC with a pre-installed version of XP. This is a little confusing.

The question is perhaps : By that time (Jan/Feb), will the OEM Premium cost less than $110? I have a feeling it wont. The reason MS is doing this is because they essentially can bill you for Vista before it comes out to make Q4 balance sheet look better. The buying of MCE is essentially a pre-bought Vista Premium. It makes perfect business sense.

EDIT : I found this form on newegg. It sounds like the offer applies to computer from an "authorized system builder". If that were the case, why would newegg be selling these. I'll probably have to call newegg...

EDIT : See the original post. I think this deal will not apply to a custom built PC.

The problem with that is, how do they know it's custom built or not?

Well, they want to see a receipt. Here check out this link , then click on either the manufacturer OR you can find a "local builder" - which will be computer shops and places like Fry's. Bascially to get the upgrade you need to send a receipt that you had your PC built by one of these "approved" builders.

Basically the message is you cant qualify for the free upgrade if you build your own PC. Newegg should stop advertising the coupon on their website since it is not valid unless you get your PC assembled by some "sanctioned" builder (sheesh!).

basically we can't get the upgrade? That's evil! I still really don't get this. Does this mean we have to buy some crap from Dell instead of making our PC's ourself? Does this mean we have to wait until January 30?

What it means is that if you want to (legally) upgrade to Vista, yes you'll have to wait for 1/30/07, but so do the "dell" folks. The only difference is that they can buy a XP MCE PC and then upgrade to Vista on 1/30 for free.

The main purpose of my post at this time is to warn home-pc builders (aka all you guys), _not_ to buy XP-pro or XP-MCE and expect the free Vista upgrade on 1/30, even though NewEgg seems to advertise this as a possibility. Just tryin' to save some fellow OC'ers from wasting some $$. If you go to NewEgg and see the upgrade coupon, its not obvious, let me tell ya!

So we pretty much have to wait until January 30, don't we. :swearing: , my computer's been outdated since the minute my family bought it. Now if I want Vista I have to wait even longer?
