Quick Input on Memory

Hey fellas,

Im new here, and new to OCing in general. I have a question about whether you think i should use PDP Patriot PC3200 RAM with 2.3.2.5 timings or Corsair XMS PC3200 RAM with 3.3.3.8 timings (both 2 x 1024mb).

And as you may tell from my question, Im not positive about timings and such.. I did read a few of the amazing guides (including my favorite Ultimate OCing Guide from Deathinator, Ctrl-B in a heartbeat) and i learned that having low timings means youll get better performance, and having higher FSB (which, in turn, gives you slower timings) gives you better performance, which is contradictory. I know that during OCing a lot of chips operate on a "give and take" basis but this i do not understand..

All help will be very appreciated. Thanks!

Oh, and about my rig:

-Lian-LI V1000 Case (2 x 120mm fans)
-AMD 64 X2 4400+ (not OC'd yet) w/ Zalman CNPS7000-Cu 92mm Heatsink
-2GB (2 x 1gb DIMMS) Corsair XMS PC3200 RAM
-eVGA GeForce 7800GTX 256MB
-Abit AN8-SLI Mobo
-Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum 2ZS
-500GB (2 x 250gb) RAID-0 HD Setup
-Lite-On 16x DVDRW
-52x/16x CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
-OCZ Powerstream 600W Power Supply (w/ sleeved cables)
-Rounded IDE and Floppy Cables
-Dual "Monitor" Setup (Gateway FPD1810, soon to be upgraded to 24" Acer, and 50" Sony DLP-TV)
-BOSE 6.1 Surround Sound System hooked up via SPD/IF

Anyone with any recommendations about my system or what to upgrade in general please I would love to hear your advice..

For your rig I would upgrade the HSF to a Scythe Infinity and, if you haven't bought that build yet, a rig around C2D instead of AMD

I would take the PDP over the Corsair

2 options...
If you already have the 2G of Corsair, I'd stick with it if it's done you well...
Or sell it off and get the Patriot.

frankly I don't see the investment worth it overall, you already have 2x1G modules.

What I would do first if I were you, check out the FAQ and see how high you can get the current 2x1G to run. If they can do anywhere near DDR 500 @ 3-4-4-8 stable, keep em and be happy

hey duke... thanks, im gonna try that when i get home. The resaon i am asking this question is not cuz im thinking of buying the new Patriot RAM but actually it is something i had a while ago, and when i had a problem with my PC tech support replaced my Patriot RAM stick (which i spent a lot of time picking out and paid more for) with the Corsairs, and I just realized it and Im pissed. I have OCed it to 214MHz (DDR 428?) and the timings went to 3.3.5.8 (from 3.3.3.8 stock).. but like i asked also, am i shooting for lower timings when I OC or better MHz in which field does each outperform the other?

Thanks for your help guys, any/all more will still be useful.

You have already received good advice...

bear in in mind that timings can be altered within the BIOS. I am not familiar w/ Abit mainboards so I can not be any more specific as to the location, but Asus' are found in the Northbridge section.

Try 3-4-4-8 for more speed, the slight timing loss wil be made up by the over all speed and hopefully a lower divider.

I suggest to try different combinations, sometimes tighter timings will give you less performance then relaxed timings.

Usually you get better perf with higher frequencies vs extra tight timings, just balance them well. To do so i like using quick benchies like Pcmark2002 and SuperPi, the given score will give you a pretty good idea before moving on to bigger benchmarks.

ahh makes a lot of sense to run a quick benchmark.. thx shack

ive been pretty busy with work the last this week but unfortunately my PC has been sitting on its side for 2 days. I changed the multiplier to 10.5 and upped the FSB to 216 and upped the voltage up a smidgen (1.350 to like 1.375, which is still low compared to others with 4400+ X2) all ala Deathinators Ultime OC Guide and now its getting to hot when it starts up (and if i let it sit for a while, i get the startup screen and i try to go into CMOS but it freezes). My video card fan gets pretty loud for some reason i could have swore i didnt change anything with that, but yea my computers pretty pissed at me either way.

Not sure why this all happened, i even shut down properly (reboot) the last time i used it before it crapped on my life. Im downloading MoBo manual to try to reset CMOS jumpers.

alright.. anyone for the love of god i really need help at this stage..

i reset the CMOS jumpers and finally got it to boot but now it go on to continue and it cant find my disk!

?!?!?! ?!?!?!?!

it goes to the next screen and then shows "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". And yes, I do set Hard Drive to boot first. Scarier thing is, in my BIOS it only finds 1 HD (I have/had 2x Maxtor Maxtor 7Y250M0 in RAID 0 Config.) Did i somehow blow that **** out? and its in "IDE Channel 4 Master" of Standard CMOS Features in BIOS.

Ive never been a very lucky person (electronically, **** hits the fan once a month or so) i shoulda thought twice about messing with OCing.

All help obviously much appreciated.
