I have decided to upgrade my GPU from an ATi Radeon HD 5450 to either a NVIDIA GTX 680 or GTX 690. More specifically the EVGA GTX 680 Classified ($559.99) and the EVGA GTX 690 ($999.99). I plan on just a single card setup, due to only one PCIe slot on my Motherboard and also it's an AMD setup. (No SLI Support) So I am asking is it worth dropping the extra $440 for the GTX 690 or should I go for the 680?

For what you would pay for the 690 you could upgrade your platform, $200 cpu, $200 mobo and have money left for a 680.

680.. Plenty of power.
You won't likely notice a difference between a GTX 680 and a GTX 690 with that CPU. Unless (as the poster above me said) you plan to move to an Intel setup anytime soon, you will not see any benefit from the GTX 690 over the 680. Thuban is nice, but it'll still bottleneck it drastically.

Also note that the 690 is a dual GPU on a single card and requires motherboard SLI compatibility to operate fully.

If you are looking for a good match for that CPU, I would recommend a GTX 580 for around $240 used or a Radeon 7870 for about $250 new.

Otherwise, get a Z77 motherboard, i5-3570k, a single GTX 680, and then add a second one if you ever need a performance kick. thumb.gif

Get a single GTX 680, but not the classified. It's not worth the price premium.

Ok thanks for the feedback so far thing is I ordered a Phenom II 980 Black Edition and if I were to upgrade my MOBO I would prefer to stick with AMD Processors should I instead look at a GTX 580 for the Phenom II 980 or will the 680 bottleneck?

You dont want to get GTX690 because you have 1 PCIE lol. You get one when you have 9 PCIE lol. Anyways upgrade to Intel. Something like 3570K and get the GTX680 or better HD 7970.

AMD released Phenom II Deneb processors in January of 2009, which makes that architecture just about 4 years old. It won't be able to adequately push a GTX 680 for sure, and would struggle with a single 580 even at 4.0 GHZ I think, depending on the game you're playing with it.

Also, going from an X6 to an X4 is a definite downgrade. If you have a Thuban, then Vishera (the AMD FX-8350 and 8320) are you only viable upgrades.

I highly recommend going Intel to push that much GPU power.

EDIT: Here's a processor comparison between Intel's 980x and a few other processors from Intel with a 965 Black Edition thrown in there. It's pretty sad vs its intel counterparts.

The reason why I chose to get the 980 is that it is a Black Edition processor so it's a little easier to OC. I know I am losing 2 cores but from the research I have done, a higher clock is better than more cores when it comes to gaming. I do a little photo editing and some video but in my opinion not enough to justify two more cores. I plan on when I buy my next CPU I will get an AMD FX but I need a new motherboard for that as my motherboard does not support AM3+ sockets. Also i just wanted to get my GPU upgrade now and then consider my Motherboard upgrade afterwards.

EDIT:

Ok reconsidering an Intel setup as Suggested by coachmark2 and grunion I would most likely go with an ASUS Sabertooth Z77 Motherboard and an i5 3570K and then buy my GTX 680. As for my old AMD Parts I'll through them all together in an old case for my friend who desperately needs a better desktop.

So by going the Intel route is it still beneficial to go with the GTX 680? Also any better motherboards around the same price point as the ASUS Sabertooth?

thumb.gif NIce choice. I really consider myself not a fanboy of any company. I honestly have nothing against AMD, but I cannot in good conscience recommend one of their CPU's for such a high end setup. So, onto motherboards....

I would recommend this AsRock for you
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157295

I don't like that ASUS because it seems very overpriced for only 2 PCIe x16 slots and "Thermal Armor" (whatever that is). Also, I've had a couple RMAs with ASUS go horribly wrong, so I tend to steer clear of them. No doubt, they make some great boards, but they are not a company I would enthusiastically recommend.

Nor is this Asrock the Be-all-end-all for a motherboard. I just really like it's feature set and it seems really well balanced for gaming and other uses. thumbsupsmiley.png
