Hey Guys
I took the plunge and bought windows 8, everything worked fine until it did an update about an hour after install ever sine then I can not see my DVD drive....?? I checked in device manager and it says code 45 device not connected, it is also under hidden hardware, I struggled using the high filter low filter fixes, I even tried the command prompt fixes but nothing works.
I refreshed windows 8 last night using my DVD rom so it is connected and will boot, it was there again as soon as installation finished but then windows did updates again and it's gone, to make sure my prob was not intermittent I installed windows 7 on another hard drive and it works perfectly.

same thing happened to me too, and the solution is just read this : 
btw before try this solution I tried to use another SATA port on my mainboard and it also worked but only 1 SATA port while others are not working, my mainboard has 2x SATA3 port and 6x SATA2 port.
Well I found another solution from internet, they say try to re-install windows 8 and this method also works for me
