The best option is Phenom II X4 955 (3.2 Ghz) and HD 7850 2GB. the FX-6300 and GTX 480 cost 140 + 170 = 310 bucks. the phenom ii x4 is as good as FX series for gaming.

You can clearly see Phenom II X4 980 (3.7 Ghz) matches FX-8350 (4 Ghz). the phenom ii x4 955 can easily be overclocked to 3.8 Ghz with voltage tweaking. Get the Phenom II X4 955 with coolermaster hyper 212 plus for 100 bucks.

For HD 7850 2GB you could get the HIS ICEQ HD 7850 2GB for 208 bucks. just check if your case can fit this card because its massive at close to 12 inches. this cooler is used on the HD 7950 cards and rated one of the best. its a beastly cooler.

if your case can't fit that card get the XFX HD 7850 2GB for 200 bucks . with Free Farcry 3 game coupon.

I appreciate the help guys, I ended up going FX-6300, and a GTX 650TI. Then after I get some more cash I can upgrade to a 7950, and use the 650ti for physx and folding. Couldn't find a better performing GPU for 140 bucks.

the decision to go with FX-6300 for gaming is not a really good one. most games don't use more than 4 threads. Phenom II X4 is actually better clock for clock and costs lesser. A 4 Ghz Phenom II X4 will need a 4.4 Ghz FX 6300 to keep up. its an ok choice. moreover you are stuck with a stock CPU cooler. so temps aren't going to be good at 4.4 Ghz. anyway whats done is done. good luck thumb.gif

I'd buy a used one off of craigslist or something, you can get some great deals. You could easily get a GTX 560ti for that much used, much better than getting a new one.

Orly?

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/102?vs=699

Seems to do just fine. Not to mention I run a lot of multi threaded apps, encoding and what not. Also, who said I was stuck with stock cooler? I got a Evo 212 push pull with PK-1 paste. Kept my Ivy bridge nice and cool so it will do just fine here.

Phenom is a fine CPU, but as you can see from my link I have done my research and my choice spanks a Phenom, it even performs slightly better than the fabled thubans. You should read reviews before giving out advice, misinformation is the cancer of OCN.

6300 can keep up or exceed a Phenom X4 in gaming even if only the application can only do 4 threads, gives 2 more threads for whatever else he wants to do without holding back which is great in a long run. and as he mentioned he does encoding and what not which again the 6300 would be a better choice over the x4 so all in all it's a win/win solution for him. smile.gif

my opinion was for gaming which you mentioned was the primary focus . In the context of FX-6300 and GTX 650 Ti vs Phenom II X4 955 with HD 7850 its no doubt that the Phenom II x4 with 7850 is the better option for gaming performance while costing the same. in fact lesser if you consider that you already have the coolermaster hyper 212 evo cooler

cheapest 7850 is 169, I got my GTX 650ti which in some games outperforms the 7850 for 20 less. Plus the 6300 outperforms the phenom in games as indicated in the site I linked, plus I do encoding. So back to what you originally said "I made a bad choice" obviously I didn't.

And the FX-6300 again outperforming phenom.

So ya I think I made the right call considering everything. thumb.gif
