Some advice on making conenctions

So, I recently ordered two floor-standing speakers, and a center channel speaker. Meaning I'll be upgrading from 2.1 audio to a 5.1 set up. I've got a few questions, and am looking for some advice on how exactly I should connect both my PC and 360 to my receiver for 5.1. So, here's the background.

My receiver is a Denon AVR-1312. Here are is the back of it.

My PC has an optical-audio out connector, which I plan on using to send 5.1 to the receiver. I was wondering if it's possible that there is a "splitter" to have a device take two optical audio lines in, and output them both on one.

I guess my first question, out of uncertainty, is does optical audio even support 5.1 audio in the first place?

If not, I then come to this:
My receiver supports HDMI 1.4a standards. I don't like HDMI all that much, but would it be possible to send HDMI from my PC to the receiver and play in 1440p while using 5.1 audio? Also, will there be enough "bandwidth" to let me play at 60Hz?

I normally use my Xbox 360 with HDMI through the receiver, but as of last night I feel like I'm noticing some input lag. Maybe it's because something was a little too hot, or not running as it should... (or maybe I was just having bad connection games)

But any advice would be appreciated.

Unfortunately optical and coaxial can't do 5.1 uncompressed/PCM. It can only send 2.0 PCM sound and the receiver can, if it has the feature, use Dolby Prologic IIx processing to create "fake" 5.1 sound from that 2.0 sound source.

So if you want to get real 5.1 surround from your PC and your receiver don't has Dolby Prologic IIx, you're either need to use the analogue 5.1 outputs from your motherboard or use HDMI from your graphic card if you want digital.

Now I'm not sure about AMD cards but with nvidia cards, you can use sound via HDMI as any other sound output and it doesn't interfere with any of the video outputs.

I'd probably use HDMI from the PC for 5.1 sound. And try with HDMI from the xbox as well just because of the high quality video and to get 5.1 if you want that also. But if you feel input lag use any other of the xbox video outputs.

Good luck connecting! thumb.gif

That was my fear with optical.

I'd rather not use virtual surround, as I know the sound quality isn't near what real 5.1 is.

My AMD cards can send sound through HDMI; but as I said, just slightly worried with bandwidth. If not I suppose it will be fine. The games I play on PC usually aren't FPS's, so no biggie. I use my computer for music quite extensively; so maybe it won't be such a big problem.

I don't think my receiver is causing input lag, I'm thinking it might be my controller throwing me off. Something of a placebo effect.

Thanks for some input though. I was starting to get worried I'd get no responses!

I have this horrible feeling you are going to end up with delayed sound out of your speakers.
Sometimes, IP.

My receiver actually puts sound out rather good in-time with the picture. I can also manually delay the sound to tune-in with the picture, if there is input lag. I don't think my audio is the lag problem, I'm more worried about video lag.

You could always try to run the HDMI from the xbox directly to your TV/monitor for video and then run a optical cable from the xbox to your receiver for sound, it may add a sound delay but it should eliminate the video delay caused by the receiver, unless the delay is caused by the TV/screen of course. My brother used to do this with his PS3 due to a faulty HDMI port on the receiver.

Well, I think it's fine, just like I said, I think I'm just in "placebo" mode. Thinking I'm having input lag issues when I haven't. I don't think I REALLY do, as I've been using this xbox through the receiver into the monitor quite a bit.

The receivers HDMI ports are pass-through, aside from the sound. So there really shouldn't be any video delay. My monitor is a U2711, which is IPS, and it's scaler is working it down to 1920 x 1080, but I really don't think there is any true input lag. Like I said, I think I'm just tricking myself into thinking there is.
