A good free video editor??

I am having the hardest time just trying to find a program that will simply cut .avi, mpeg's, wmv mp4's etc without it changing anything else with the files....I just simply want to cut out a part of a video and keep the rest...no joining or anything else. Window's Movie maker changes the video aspect...other free ones just basically suck. I apologize for this being such a "Newbie" questions..but I have been going nuts the last 3 hours looking for something... Thanks for any help.

Just cutting? You don't have an old adobe suite with Media Encoder by any chance do you? If not, Virtual Dub is probably your best bet.

Uh.. Taken on what device? a Video camera? some have built in "video editors" that you can use to cut apart from some Android devices having that feature too.
