I'm trying to put together a way for me to play movies on my theater setup without having to move my PC out of my office. I've contemplated a Boxee, but I like the idea of having the versatility of a PC on the TV. I would like to have a lot of storage or the ability to access my main desktop over a network. So my idea is to either build a mini barebone system, or to find a way to have my desktop connected to the TV and be usable from that room and still remain in the office.

Are there any other ways to accomplish this? Like maybe a external hard drive that's on a network by itself?

You could also by an external hard drive and a Western Digital Media Player and you'd be set.

As well as WHDI, there is also a system called Intel Wireless Display (WiDi). For example, there is a WiDi version of the Asus P8Z77-I deluxe available.
