So, I just don't have the time to hold shift and spam F8 after choosing the boot drive.

if you have to boot your os after ahci driver faild, you can use your dvd or usb that you installed windows 8 from it and hit "repair your windows" then Troubleshoot option, Advanced Options then system restore

Hello darknessmc

I have tried to do that but it does not work, system restore seems not to work in this case (the problem is the same when rebooting after the system restore), I don't know why. However I also guess the problem is due to the AMD AHCI driver.

Strangely I found another case that causes this problem when installing or running DVDFab products, as DVDFab Passkey or Decrypter. When I run these softwares, my computer seems to try to load something from the hard drive (the light remains on) during 15 mn and the softwares run (but are unusable after, each try to use them causes the computer to do the same during 15 mn... so I uninstalled them). And so of course with the MS AHCI driver (or without the AMD chipset drivers).
That never happened with Windows 7 which these softwares were working on.

Seems that there is some disk addressing that works very bad with AMD chipset and Windows 8, but I just wonder why this happened to nobody else.

Greetings,
Ash

Wow, I'm glad I finally found some others with a similar problem. I can basically add some more data to this perplexing problem.

First, I did an upgrade from Windows 7 with the 12-8 chipset drivers already installed and had absolutely no problems. Then I decided to do a clean install one day just to be extra sure my performance was the highest it could be. Obviously, when I installed the 12-10 chipset drivers I would get stuck on the spinning logo boot screen. It would appear that it will never boot, but actually it does given enough time. I finally went to bed one night and it was booted to the login screen in the morning. Every subsequent reboot takes 30 or so minutes.

I can confirm that my restore points were wiped out either during the chipset installation or in the automatic repair process that I try to use to boot after determining that 12-10 drivers were indeed the problem.

I think I'm going to try the 12-8 drivers to see if those will work. My understanding is that the standard MS AHCI drivers have much lower disk performance.

My bro had the same problem, plugged in a USB drive and it booted right up, unplugged it and it stalled out again, so he just leaves it plugged in. I'm not positive as I haven't had a chance to play with it but, I think it may be tied to the secure boot options in the BIOS. I'll check into it as we both have identical rigs but set up independently, mine boots fine but his doesn't.

I have the exactly same issue. Seems like amd chipset drivers are not quite ready for win8. Using microsoft ahci drivers as well, no problems, however performance is slightly lowered compared to win7 where i had the amd ahci driver installed. Had anyone found a solution yet?

Nope, but I just reformatted my hdd, will try to see if it was the leftovers from my old Windows install that was causing the trouble.

Nope, only problem with my old WD Blue AAKS tough as my new EZEK (I think) is working just fine. Might have something to do with older drive. Hope AMD release a fix soon.

I also have a AAKS.... so is obviously a bug between drivers and older hardware..

Yes, I'll try to see if I can report it on to an AMD staff, at least we nailed it down to a drive or "older ones"...
