Silverstone SG09 build question

Thread Starter
This is my first post on overclock.net so I am pretty new to this forum and unsure if this is the best place to post this.

I am planning on doing my first SFF build and was thinking of trying a dual GPU setup. I know this is usually not advised on a mATX motherboard since both cards will be right on top of each other, but this case seems like it will have enough cooling since there are 3 fans blowing directly over the cards. My question is what kind of GPU coolers I should get? Does anyone have experience running cards right next to each other?

Would a non reference cooler that exhaust air out both the front and back be the best in the SG09 since it would have cooling from the 3 side fans and the air can leave the case from both the back and that hole in far front side? Or would reference blower style cards be better since they don't dump air into the case?

I was thinking of 2 cards like this.

Welcome to OCN! biggrin.gif

The non-reference coolers exhaust hot air in all four directions, so it would not be optimal to get those for your setup since the hot air is fighting against the cold air. The blower types would be better since it would intake all the cold air being pushed in and exhaust it out the back.

The only problem is that regardless of which cooler type you pick, the top card will always run a lot hotter due to being "suffocated" for air as it will literally be a few mm away from the bottom card's PCB.

Yeah, blower-style GPU coolers would be better suited.

Checkout Anandtech review they do give a lot of tips about the 09. thumb.gif

A lot of HIS's 7-series cards have that Black Hole Impeller style cooler that's supposed to be good for CFX.

You may want to look into that if you're non-partial as to red or green.

i'm thinking of doing the same thing.

if you go to Silversone's site, you can download the manual for this case, and towards the back they give specific recommendations on how to deal with dual GPUs in this type of case. i'm confident it'll work.

Im also thinking of doing the same thing. Unfortunately there arent much blower style coolers on 7950s except for reference design, and I feel like those run pretty loud but Im not certain. Anyone know how much space would there be between the two MSI twin frozr 7950s in crossfire on an MATX board? It says on newegg the cards and 1.5 inches tall.

i would think if u are using a non referance design u can use the 80mm fan as exhaust to draw air out as well as flipping the psu around to help drive hot air out as well

This. It's exactly what that 80mm fan is for: providing negative pressure to keep the GPU heat in the bottom, and letting the AP181 blow down to make an air buffer from above.

as i own one of these, my advice:
HIS iceq turbo if possible
if you're using a non-blower cooler flip the top 180mm fan.
