Debating on upgrading to dual subwoofer setup

Thread Starter
Currently run my computer and consoles through my home theater system. 5.1 Boston Acoustics sattelite speakers powered by a Denon amp. System has a 8" sub which is by no means weak but I enjoy my bass and have recently been debating on adding a Polk PSW505 12" sub which I found a few relatively cheap in the $250 range. Anyone else run dual subs? Any suggestions or thoughts? The reason I am thinking of doing this is the 8" while very loud and clear has no real depth to it, figure if I tune it the two would compiment eachother quite nice.

If you're going to run dual subs you should run two of the same model and not mismatch them.

You'll get weird behavior in your low-end otherwise.

Even if I have them on different phases? Would a 12" from BA work or are you talking about running the same exact subs? What kind of problems would I run into?

i would recommend running one good sub, might cost you a little more, but i'm sure you would be happier over all instead having to tune everything to match the 8.

I would just use one sub thats best for the other speakers you have.

If you really want to use 2 i would go with 1 sub up to something like 80hz and 1 bass module (not a sub) up to something like 150 or 180hz and set them up together with a crossover.

Still i think its best to have a 1 good bassmodule that can handle everything, home subs normally dont do that well in the higher bass regions and i always feel i miss something with them (hence why i got Dynacord and S.A bass speakers myself) and yes i know there are good "home" subs that can do it all but they cant be found for 250$ though.

I have bought mine all second hand (not that you should get Dynacords or so, your neighbours wont like it) and maybe thats the route you should take... Ebay can be your best friend.

only run dual subs if your satellites have the power to match it, you dont want all rumbling and no sound. If you get teh 2nd sub definitely make sure t's the same as your current one as tuning both of them will be a pain

Dual subs is always a good option in my book. It helps to cancel any nulls that may be occurring in your room and can be used to smooth out your bass response. If you want to use two different sized subs though you should look at reading Earl Geddes papers about mismatching subs to smooth out the response. I would link it here but I dont have time at the moment to search for you. To do this you would need to look at investing in an SPL meter and making careful measurements and set the subs up individually and pay close attention to the gain and crossover of each to get the best possible results.

QFT...

Multiple subs don't create a "rumble", they smooth bass response when set up correctly.

Ok so my speakers are BA sattelites which are nice. They have a good mid to high range for sound and fairly clear, granted polk rm700's would kill them or any other high end set. My sub being an 8" is nice but can very easily hear it struggle with anything of depth, but it covers the mid-low end VERY well and clearly just has no real punch to it let alone volume. Honestly with these speakers if I got them a good sub to just slam away the bass and leave all the mid=range and up to the speakers it would sound great. I want my sub to PUNCH! Want to feel like it got up and just slammed me in chest, which a little 100w (I believe that's what it is) 8" sub just cannot do no matter how hard it tries. So guess I am more looking to replace the sub with a 12" and trying to balance price/performance. I know the Polk PSW 505 used to be a monster for its price. The new Polk budget line is CRAP do not even bother recommending them, I sold them and even talked with the Polk dev team on how bad they were and the Monitor series. Haven't kept up with other brands lately so looking for others. Velodyne would be my dream come true but just way beyond my budget.

You will realize that in audio there is always going to be something better and higher performing...you go from $100 speakers to $1000 dollar speakers...and then there are $10,000 speakers and there are even some that are over $100,000....hence the reason I always recommend DIY stuff as you can find designs online that you can build for less and get great results....I want to teach others from my own mistakes and help them get the best value for their dollar possilbe.....

The best bang for your dollar with a 250 budget is going to be to sell the 8" sub and get a Dayton Audio 12" driver from parts express. Buy the driver, buy an amp, build a sealed box, and then you will have something that will perform way better than what you can buy for 250.

The other option would be to look used and get a 12" sub and then some measuring equipment. tune the 12" sub first and then hook up the 8" to help fill where you have any dips in frequency response. However when you start having multiple subs you have to also worry about placement and phase. So it really depends on what you personally want to do.
