Back in action!

Thread Starter
Just wanted to let you know that I am back in action after a long layoff! Been crazy busy the last year and now that I live in Texas, to hot to run my machines 24/7 until now.

Anyway, getting some new rigs together, hopefully just in time to hop in on the BGB event!

Looks like there are several new projects out there to participate in since the last time I crunched, what are the good ones for PPD? I always run WCG and Milkyway as those 2 I really care about, but what are the best ones these days for max PPD?

Also, my newest build will have nvidia GPUs for the first time. What projects are best suited for them? I plan to run GPUgrid on them, but not sure what else runs good on Nvidia.

What about CPU WU? Are there any multi-threaded ones out there? I used to run Aqua, but I see that is all wrapped up.

Thanks!

Welcome back biggrin.gif
I'm not sure what runs best on Nvidia GPU's and as I'm fairly new, I don't have a lot of experience with CPU tasks. I run multiple instances of Poem and that pretty much ties up all my CPU power. When I joined I found the spreadsheet to be very helpful in working out what would get me the best PPD. You can find that here, but I'm sure that someone will be along later that knows Nvidia cards smile.gif
DistrRTgen seems to put out a lot of points on both AMD and Nvidia wink.gif

Hey thanks for the reply!

I have been running DistrRTgen all weekend and have yet to get a GPU WU for some reason... double checked my settings... still nothing??

I need to get POEM running again, I see they have GPU support. I also have been reading about how people are doing multiple WU per GPU these days with some sort of config file hack. Is that what you are talking about?

Thanks!

No problem!
For DistrRTgen, it's worth trying this. It worked for my 7850 card. Go to the project page and under preferences, set it to "Run Test Applications". I didn't get any work units until I did this. Screen shot in the last post on this page here

To get Poem to run multiple work units, you need to use an app_info.xml file. There's some info on that here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1155850/poem-home-gpu-support/80#post_17624565
Check out the detailed instructions in the first post and good luck thumb.gif

Thanks DR! So last night I got Dirt running, and I also got my POEM setup for multiple WUs. Running 4 WUs per 5870 (got 2 in the box so 8 total), run times seem to be about ~42min with the beta drivers, and were about ~43-44 with the 12.10 drivers. Does this sounds about right?

Also, an recommendations for nvidia cards? My new rig will be operational on Thursday, and I got 2 GTX670s to put in there.

Thanks!

sounds alright for poem. for boinc the 5xx series nvidia cards are more powerful. nvidia took a lot of the double precision capability away from the 6xx series to give people a reason to buy their tesla cards.
