Did I waste money on getting a GTX 680 instead of a 7970? :| - Page 6

Even though I prefer AMD over Nvidia I do think you wasted your money. For me get what you feel works for you and that goes for GPU's as well as CPU's. There is a lot of fanboy options when it comes to GPU and CPU buying habits. My person impression of the 7xxx line and the 6xx line generation GPU's is that they both are good products this time around and it really comes down to person preference and what the manufactures decide add onto the cards as far as cooling and extras that really set any of them apart.

I don't know if it's important to ya by you'll be able to run physX which the other one can't do without fiddling with things. I'd said your not out of the FPS race.

Yeah I plan on keeping my cards for about a year and sell em to get the next gen. Honestly if I'm contented with the performance of a single 680 in 5760x1080 then I might not get the second 680 and get an 8970.

Oh, gotcha! lol

I did that, gamed on hd4000 with a 1280x1024 crt till I could afford a gpu and a 1440p ips screen. Got a 670 FTW for 325, so I don't regret it as my daily driver. I oced it to 1300mhz core and 7800mhz vram, and it does really good. You get physx and 3d if going sli...Plus you can fold!
There are some tweakings incoming, to the whole gpu folding arena with Kepler. It seems it'll bring a major boost for gpu folders over smp.
(not sure if you're into that but well, never hurts)

7800mhz that would be some sort of memory speed record wouldn't it?

For the people in here saying that these cards "trade blows", remember that this only holds true for the standard 7970 (925) model and 12.11.

The Ghz Edition HD 7970, with the 12.11 beta drivers, is a good 10-15% faster than the GTX 680.

The standard 7970 at stock speeds performs neck and neck with the 680. It's also cheaper and can be clocked to "GE" performance levels and beyond, extremely easily.

Personally, I would not currently recommend an nVidia card over an AMD card, especially given how pricing/performance/over all value is at the moment.

But since you've already bought the GTX 680, I say have no regrets and be happy. The 680 is still an excellent card, especially if you're only gaming at 1080p/non120Hz, it's more than you'll need to max out virtually any game.

All around the GTX 680 is a superior card but neither are bad and nothing wrong with either card. That's just my 02c from someone who owns both and uses both in 2 diff rigs.
I bought my 7970's when they released and bought the GTX 680's when they released. Only thing the 7970's have over the GTX 680's is the extra ram for super high res gaming and that's about it. It's not really better at anything else.

7970 should be better at GPGPU. IMO

Should be but atm it isn't thanks to poor software support. That should slowly change but at the moment 7970s are for all intents and purposes only useful for gaming

Poorly informed much? Or just incredibly biased?

Performance? The 7970 GE is the fastest single card, sir, period. That shouldn't even be up for debate anymore. Over-clockablity? The 680's are generally not better overclockers than most 7970's. You must be joking.

And the "AMD has bad drivers!" claim seriously needs to die already. I came from a GTX 460, and more recently a GTX 570, before finally taking a chance with some 7970's at launch. My experience thus far with AMD driver support has been no worse than what I experienced with Nvidia.

If all you care about is what other people are gonna say and not the performance then you probably should figure out other things before your GPU choice since clearly there is something wrong there.

You will get better drivers with Nvidia (last AMD driver upgrade is still not trumping Nvidia) and AMD is offering very solid price/performance right now.

So either way you will get great GPUs if you shoot for the high end line.

Found this neat benchmark:

http://technewspedia.com/geforce-gtx-680-geforce-310-33-vs-radeon-hd-7970-catalyst-12-11-ghz-edition/

IDK if that's still biased but it looks like they trade blows, which goes against people stating that "AMD is the single most powerful GPU today period". Just looking at the facts and why AMD people bash GTX 680 users as the "wrong choice".

Here's the complete review:

http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=32344&page=3

To be clear I'm not siding with any card but it seems like the AMD users are being too Optimistic about having better performance "hands down" than the GTX 680..
