How can I simply stream from PC to HDTV (xp) - Page 3

Well my primary monitor is my main monitor as it is bigger etc... I am not sure of the actual resolution of either monitor. If I used XBMC I would want it to be used in correlation with my main monitor as well as the TV...so is that possible? And if I want to watch on my TV...can I just unplug the 2nd monitor..plug in the PC/TV cable and have my TV mirror w/e the primary monitor shows? I won't lose any features/resolution/quality etc when watching the HD movies on my TV (just streaming what the main monitor shows) instead of watching directly on the PC do I? I don't want to set all this up with XBMC only to find I can watch HD on the computer

Are you saying that my monitor and TV must be of the same resolution to watch the HD movies from my external HD plugged into my PC on my TV?

The HDMI switcher linked earlier WILL NOT WORK for what you need.

You need an HDMI splitter such as this one for it to work. The one linked earlier allows 3 different inputs to be displayed on the same screen. The one I linked will do 1 input to 2 different screens. There are probably cheaper splitter as this was the first one I found on newegg.

Happy hunting

So what you are saying is that since both my gpu slots are taken up....would I plut this device directly into one of the gpu slots and then plug my monitor and TV into the other end? This product says it doesnt suggest using it for HDMI cables?

What the note is referring to is "Hot Plugging" which is unplugging the HDMI cables while either the computer or monitor is on. If you hook it up correctly it will be just fine.

What you would need to do is something like this
Code:
. gpu
. |
. HDMI switch
. _____|_____
. | |
. monitor TV

. _____|_____
. | |
. monitor TV

Okay so basically I can leave one monitor untouched and in its gpu slot, but must unplug the other monitor...plug in the HDMI switch...and then plug both the monitor/TV into the switch as well? How would I have my TV mirror the images/sounds of the primary monitor using an HDMI switch? Say I want the TV to mirror images/sounds of the primary monitor...would I unplug the primary, replace it with the switch, and then plug the primary/TV into the switch?

Is there a way to have my TV show the images AND sounds of what the monitor would show, like if I used an HDMI cable? Like if I wanted to watch a torrent on my computer..thats simple but I want the image on my TV along with sound

It varies quite a bit to be honest.

If you are running straight HDMI from your graphics card to the switch most graphics cards will send an audio signal through (not 100% if all will) the Switch duplicates the display and audio and sends it back out both outputs. If you wanted to watch a movie then you just load up the movie on that screen make sure the audio settings are using the HDMI output as default device and it will carry audio to the primary monitor and the TV.

If you are using a DVI-HDMI converter then it is not possible unless there is some device that takes a 3.5mm input with the DVI converts it and outputs HDMI but that would just add even more hassle that you don't need.

What if I just had an HDMI cable running from the TV and left it unplugged but when I wanted to watch a movie I could unplug monitor 2 and plug the TV in its place...would this then show whatever monitor 1 shows?

3 options

1. Get the splitter (two screens total at once)
2. Manually unplug and plug what you want (two screens total at once)
3. Buy a cheap secondary video card specifically to drive your TV. (four total screens at once)
