[CT] Apple Bans Blu-ray From Macs. - Page 31

It's not Apple's fault... I don't have an optical drive because it's an unnecessary component I can do without. I don't have a cap, but can't even stream decent 480p without stuttering. 1.5/.3 is $60; 100/100 fiber is $260 a month, without a cap. Anybody stating the Cloud/streaming is the future needs to understand greed is going to set this back, especially in the US. ISP's don't want to upgrade. Correction, they upgraded their price, and profits aren't "in the tank" due to piracy.

A Blu-Ray drive is an option, but the fact that everything is going to streaming leads everybody to assume connections will automatically increase to meet the demand. There already is a demand, and it's not being met. Not every person here can sustain HD, and not everybody here has a choice of faster services.

So for now. Go online, and order a Blu-Ray drive. Download compatible software. Watch movie. The story should end there.

*Buffers 480p*

Let's be honest here, do they really enforce it? I have a 50GB cap with a 3mbit connection and have yet to receive or get notified of anything. I've blown through that cap many times.

Seems some of the haters here who think iTunes is the only option seem to have forgotten about Netflix, Hulu, and the many more ( much more ) popular streaming services, that seem to provide enough satisfaction for 99% of the population that wants to stream movies.

Anyone complaining about quality, well... you're in the 1% and unfortunately as put by someone else earlier on " Is a selfish move " to want to force a company to go out of the way and provide for you, when you can just as easily go buy an external bluray drive and be on your merry way.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite with an HD-DVD drive; then it went away, and the extra spent on it was useless. Apart from X79, I'm never being an early adopter again tongue.gif

so i guess other manufacturers also "banned" blu-ray by not having it on 95% of their computers?

I'v never heard of tethering an iMac to a cell phone, but if I had a 4G phone and left over data, I would defiantly use up the rest of my cap on 4G tethering. I tether my MacBook to my iPhone on a weekly basis to bypass my University firewall (Blocks remote desktop and FTP).

And no, it really hasn't worked for cell phone carriers either. The majority of cell phone providers now have data limits on their plans. As far as I know, there is only one carrier, who is in serious financial trouble and looking to be bought out, who provides "Unlimited Data".

Nonetheless, it's still a better scenario for consumers (not necessarily for carriers) today then before the carriers were hit with the increased data demands. Capped 4G/3G as a widely utilized technology is better then people still using data-less call/text phones on a 2G network with smart phones being mostly limited to business use.

I feel you. I don't know that I've ever hit it, but then again, I rarely see the speed I pay for; unless it's late, late night, weekday, etc...

Seriously... Until iTunes movies match Blu ray quality(they don't), then BD will always be the best stop for quality. So it isn't holding anyone back.

Yeah, it's definitely not holding anyone back (The average speed and quota on peoples internet is) but people are only hating on this because it's Apple.

lolnope That's a poor mans excuse of why people hate.

So, what alternative source of 1080p video with a bit rate of 40Mbps are you proposing, then?

Most BRs don't even come close to that, looking at my ripped copy of Avatar or Avengers (The two ones I left on the compression but with practically equal quality to what was on disk) I see it at 16.4 Mbps for Avengers (16.4GB file, too) and 9 674 Kbps for Avatar (10GB) both of which my ADSL2+ connection could handle streaming easily.

I ask people in this topic: When was the last time you used any CD in your PC? And the time before that? And the time before that? For a few, yes, it will be quite common but for most I'd be surprised if they used it much past OS installation.

It was Sunday, I was installing BF2. On the PC market, optical discs can be needed, they are still used by millions. And optical discs in general are used by billions.

No, the the reason why people hate, trust us. If another company did this, they'd be praised as innovators. When Apple does it, not a chance.

Welcome to the PC market, say hello to the Mac market.

Macbook airs don't come with disc drives, macbooks used to but after the retina version stopped, and now the imacs are thin enough to not need/want a disc drive. Apple knows there market and users, they know what they can and can't do.
