If you weren't even considering buying from Apple in the first place, then there is nothing for you to worry about/complain in the first place.

I know I can buy another external dvd drive, I got that since I first read the article. and I was just saying. It's like opinions aren't welcome anymore.

Very true quote.

As to opinions.. fact of the matter is, Apple is doing away with built in optical media whether you like it or not. Don't like it, then don't use Apple products ( not like 80% of the users here complaining would even touch them, or so they say in plenty of other Apple threads ).

lol

I can see the disc drive being a nice setback to making their products even slimmer. Some people can leave the disc world, most can't.

30mb plus connections, 1tb+ sized drives, the problem is the content owners don't want to charge less, they want to charge the same high price, withouth the product production costs at the reproduction home consumption side of the market.

Second, an optical drive can be much more durable that an HDD or SDD.

Now, if we're talking about streaming video, then there is no replacement for BluRay quality, not to mention you actually "own" the content (another thing corporations have a problem with). If we're talking about downloads, let's not forget that everything takes space, everything can easily be deleted by accident and generally putting all your eggs in one basket is not always good.

So did Floppy Discs (And they still do for the few people that still use them), they are obsolete; a USB Flash Drive is more hardy than a CD or DVD (BluRay does have the anti-scratch coating, to be fair) and is reusable.

Most people don't care or notice either, that point is moot.
(I know I can't see the difference unless I'm really trying to look for it between YouTube 1080p and uncompressed Blu-Ray on a 55" 1080p TV that cost $4k)

They think that MP3 audio or even AAC is good, when in fact, compared to uncompressed audio, it is garbage compared to uncompressed audio.

Same with streamed 1080p content. Compared to uncompressed video, it is a joke.

But for the mindless drones out there with their ear buds (yeah, another piece of garbage quality audio) in place, they are the cat's meow.

Sure, I'll take my 200-300GB of FLAC content around with me..Just give me an audio player that shows it.
Most people don't care about the difference because it just isn't really there on 90% of mobile products, I use 48Kbit/s Ogg Vorbis on my SGSII to fit all of that in under 8GB.

AAC and Vorbis are good compared to FLAC, etc because they still offer a significant amount of the quality for a much smaller file-size, once again, find me an FLAC player that can play all my files..What about live tracks or, well, most music? Rock (Guitar, bass, drums and vocals) doesn't really show the difference too much, if you predominately listen to rock I'd suggest going to compressed for that as the difference is virtually nil.

As for streamed 1080p content vs BR, the quality is noticeably worse..for some people, most don't care; I know I take the convenience of it over the slight quality loss, and what I don't I just rip to digital anyway. (Which you still happily and easily can do)

I still doubt that most people would complain if it wasn't Apple doing this, how many times a month do you use your ODD?

Any new android device plays .flac.

I know, just tell me how to fit 200GB in 16GB storage (Maybe with a 128GB MicroSD card if I really wanted to splurge) without compression, I compressed it to 8GB as ogg vorbis at 45Kbit/s and it sounds the same as the one FLAC album on there, I can notice the difference with good headphones or on my PC..I'd just not take those bike riding, for example.

If you ran a corporation wouldn't you do the same thing if you could?

Microsoft recently made Windows Media Center a paid add on and I didn't see anyone complain about that. Even before they made it a paid add on you could also buy/rent movies to stream from them, long before Apple did it.

And apparently you need to download the ability to play DVDs out of the box, which may or may not cost money; didn't see many people complaining about that.

Though I think a Discs are still necessary in tomorrow's world. I know that the internet is also the future, though in terms of backing up a system, I would rather have a physical medium to store my data than some foreign server.

So since apple eliminates the Disc drive in their systems, I am not even going to Consider Apple anymore personally. It's not like I have considered them before, but now it's confirmed.

Large external drive? Large Flash Drive? I know I want to get a 128GB Flash Drive with stuff I can't really replace easily to be able to grab in case of fire or the like.

As it is I use the 50GB of space I have on dropbox for having a highly compressed, passworded and encrypted (Using truecrypt) rar of some of that stuff.

Funny story, I actually had the superdrive in my macbook replaced under warranty - I wore it out burning spindles upon spindles of DVDs for work (unix/linux boot discs, slide shows for clients, etc). I used it until i started getting focus and media layer transition errors.

Were I to have that kind of load to put on it again, I'd probably buy an external anyways (on their dime) just so I didn't have to wear out my own equipment (not to mention that 5.25" ODDs are more robust than laptop drives anyways). Given that I'd buy an external next time for the work, a new laptop not having an ODD doesn't really bother me. more room inside for batteries / cooling / better MB anyways (for example, new 13" RMBP has dual cooling fans, mine has only one, thanks ODD).

Is this sarcasm?

If not, you can easily grab an external BluRay drive + an app which can play BluRay.
