Noctua's site says the NH-L12 is compatible with the Asrock Z77E-ITX but COVERS the PCIE slot.

Nice, thanks! The NH-L9i looks good. Sadly, it looks like it hasn't hit the Newegg/Amazon/others yet. Googling: NCIX is showing a 1-2 week wait and QuietPCUSA lists it, though they might be deceptive about the availability. Can't wait long for it. Gonna email 'em. Otherwise, the search continues.

Samuel 17: I looked it up from mentions in another thread earlier. It doesn't appear to be readily available anywhere. :/
Noctua NH-L12: this comment in another thread also got me a bit concerned with a GPU in. I'm not really wanting to bend it unless it's the only option but....
...how much bending (hammering) are we talking?

With the heatsink attached to the mobo, I pulled the fins in the upward and forward direction, taking care that it doesn't go backwards towards the PCI-E slot. It'll look like an opened crocodile mouth. Then bend it forward and downwards. No hammering involved.

Heh, I just posted this elsewhere. I'll copy/paste here with edits if needed:

There are a couple of basic heatsinks on the market that are similar to the stock coolers used on the old Core 2 Quads, meaning copper core and around 60-65mm tall including fan. One is the LOGISYS Computer IC231PWM and the other is the MASSCOOL 8W2002F1M4. I used the Logisys in a build with a 3570K overclocked to 4.2GHz on all cores. I've run torture testing without throttling at 4.2GHz with the Logisys. They are very similar but the Logisys might be a hair better because I think there is more fin area. The Masscool might be better for rolling your own fan because it looks as if you can just mount any open corner 80mm fan in there, while with the Logisys maybe a 92mm fan will fit, but you'd have to do some cutting.

PRO
May be able to roll your own fan.
Copper cores.
Bolt on, not push pins.
Taller than stock heatsink.
Better cooling performance than stock heatsink.
Cheaper than the arguably better heatpipe units.
Low profile, fits in Silverstone SG05/SG06, Lian Li PC-Q7/Q11/Q08/Q25.

CON
Cost money (stock heatsink is "free").
Can be loud if your motherboard PWM control doesn't sufficiently slow it down.
Not as good cooling as more expensive units.

Right now there's a 15% off coupon code BTEJNHA38 expires 11/4 for CPU coolers at Newegg. I picked up my Logisys for $15.99+tax at Micro Center when I bought the motherboard/CPU combo.

Thanks! I'll certainly consider that LOGISYS Computer IC231PWM now. I'm naturally skeptical as to whether it performs much better than stock at that price.

I'll compile a list of possible low-profile coolers for Z77E-ITX later today for others in this situation.

Haven't had time to compile a serious list yet.

However...

I decided to pull the trigger on the Phanteks PH-TC90LS. This review looked decent. We'll see. There's a chance the base won't be tall enough to clear some of the capacitors if it extends -- one is immediately along the line of the holes. I wish manufacturers would give extremely detailed measurements and pics of everything where it matters. Anyway, I appreciate the help and suggestions.

I'll let you all know if it's compatible in a couple days.

The GeminII M4 doesn't fit properly, according to this person:

I used the Zalman CNPS8000b cooler and it did way better than stock cooler on stock clocks for my 3570k. I tried the Cooler Master Geminii M4 but it wouldn't clear the PCI-E slot on my ASRock Z77 ITX board.

Phanteks PH-TC90LS does NOT fit Asrock Z77E-ITX.

It's a real shame. If it were just a few millimeters taller from the cpu it would hover over the capacitor. Or, if that little indented curve in one of the corners of the plate were twice as long, it would fit. Someone with the tools could grind and wash that metal away and make it fit if they really wanted to. It's as if the engineers who design these are trying to support less boards and make life difficult. It'd be so easy to design the bottom with indented sides all around and support a ton more boards. Whatever.

Back to Amazon, it goes.

Everything's packed into the PC-Q18A and managed. It was no easy feat. I'm about to test the stock fan now. I'll look around more and try to decide on a new CPU cooler in the next few days, then redo it.

BTW: Velcro Reusable Self-Gripping Cable Ties were one of the best purchases ever. They work amazingly well and you get hundreds. Incredible value. Don't think twice. Get them now.

Its threads like this that motivate me to get my club to compile a list of compatible heatsinks for this motherboard. I will make a post on there linking to this thread and see if I can get some people over here to help you.

If you want to check the club out, its in my sig.
