Installed windows 8, now my HD 7970 coil whine

Hi,

So I ordered a XFX HD 7970 Double D last week. I had the pleasure to game with it for a good 10 hours last week, then I decided to install windows 8 on my machine. So I did a clean install, installed the AMD 12.11 drivers and launched a game, and my card started to coil whine pretty badly.

Does anyone know what's going on? XFX suggest that I do a RMA but I want to make sure that it is not a software problem before doing that.

EDIT : Okay, so the coil whine is especially bad in darksiders 2. However, if I start the game, alt-tab out of it and then come back, the coil whine goes from a high pitched dial-up noise to a much more quieter buzzing noise.

What the hell?

Hmm, why don't you try to change the voltages around perhaps?

Should I bump it or lower it?

maybe lower first.

Im kinda using the theory how you have to turn down your processor OC in windows 8 vs windows 7.

Think it's the CPU?

Mine is heavily overclocked ATM. I'll put it back on stock and i'll let you know if it change anything.

EDIT : Reverted my CPU to stock and underclocked my card to 800/1000. The coil whine is still as bad.

Coil whine is perfectly normal.

Maybe the OS is putting more load on to the GPU? Who knows.

Well apparently both XFX and NCIX think that it's not normal, since they are suggesting a RMA.

Do coil whine happen just like that? One day it's fine and the other it starts?

I can hear it with my card with anything over 1.2v. At 1.3v its very noticeable. Check what kind of Voltages you card is hitting with MSI AB. I would also suggest to download 12.8 Drivers for now.

I think that the voltage is locked on my card. I will do what you say for now!
Thanks for the input, it's really appreciated.
